My goldens are great with kids but I'm not sure what you mean about taking care of a house? If you mean housecleaning, they don't help at all.

Goldens can be great family dogs if properly trained and socialized. They are also usually good with children provided that the kids aren't too rough. As for watching the house, all the goldens that I personally know would gladly help the theif carry out the furniture.

A Golden Retriever is a very good family dog if it is given a huge yard or is run a couple miles a day. They are so full of energy that if not exercised they can chew through darn near anything, sofas, cabinets, beds, chairs.... But Retrievers treat kids like their own pups, And strangers like strangers. a Golden Retriever is a not a good city dog, but half an acre and a spirited run on weekends should keep your retriever as happy as a pup and as loyal as a dog for the next 15 to25 years. And your best pal whether you like it or not.

Goldens can be great family pets. Some will bark when someone comes to the door, but most will gladly hold the door open while a burglar steals your big screen.
That said a poorly bred, undersocialized and undertrained dog of any breed can be a bad family pet.
Make sure you get your dog from a rescue that screens its dogs temperment, or from a reputable breeder. After that invest the time for socialization and training. Never leave children alone with any animal.

OK Goldens are great family pets as long as they aren't badly bred, trained and properly socialized. Taking care of the house? I did consider trying to get a couple of mine to use a broom once in a while lol...not big on guarding.
BEST family dog ever? That's debatable, I don't believe in a best anything and that would depend on your lifestyle. But they certainly can be one of the best without a doubt

From my experience they are amazing dogs, with kids and other animals. They do however tend to be emotional dogs that need a lot of attention, so if you are gone a lot consider a dog that is more independent, and less maitanice. This bread is very loving and needy, also make good guard dogs. Ive always experienced that you will get out of the dog what you put into them. Lots of love and make sure they know your the boss, or else you will have a hipper mischivis dog on your hands. Good Luck!!!!

i have a 17 month old daughter and my golden is excellent with her. my daughter literally hangs on this dogs ears and my golden has never shown aggression towards her. my golden will bark if someone is near the house but I'm doubting very much that he would ever bite anyone. he will warn me someone is near or coming up to the house but once they are inside he could care less. ( he only wants people to give him love)

They would be a really good playmate, but I think its the other way around you are suposed ot be taking care of the house and kids not the dog!
But they will protect who they have to when the time is needed!

My golden is the sweetest dog ever, but when she needs to protect us, she will. She can always tell when someone is bad.
If you have kids, I'd highly suggest a golden! All little kids love my dog, and whenever she sees people, she runs to them and greets them. They're very friendly and docile. Not to mention super gorgeous.

Yes...Golden's are a great family companion and great with kids...I haven't met one with a poor temperament. They have a very happy personality and love to please their family. They are very obedient and easy to train. Most of the people I know that show in obedience own a Golden.
They are not considered a "guard dog"...but any dog's bark should scare away intruders. Most thieves will steer far away from homes with dogs....they don't want to mess with them.
