Until the past century, no one had running water and electricity. Plenty of newborns were brought into the world under those conditions and thrived. So quit knocking someone's lifestyle choice just because it is not your own. If all the power went out tomorrow, who would be laughing then? Lack of what are considered to be modern conveniences does not make them stupid or backward.

They probably would like many of the same things that any one might like to receive for a gift, including money. Just don't get them a toaster (unless it's one of those wire contraptions to use over the fireplace) They might like a cast iron dutch oven. You might google pioneer tools or some such key words, and see what folks used a hundred years or so ago that might be useful now.

Wow, you could come up with some really creative ideas for a couple like this.
I'm assuming they have gas lamps, etc. We lose power a lot on the farm where we live so we have a portable gas stove and lamps etc.
What about a really cool set of candle holders or something like that?
Or you could go with some more of the traditonal presents like kitchenware, linen, etc.
The sky is your limit really - the fact that they have no electricity or running water doesn't really limit your range of options. And im assuming they currently have no electricity or running water because they don't want it in the first place.

Sounds like West Virginia... get them a "Teeth Brush" as I am sure the dentist is getting pretty rich by now.

Or they say cash is king...with no running water, you will look like the king with two hundred bucks. That should pay for your plate: Beer and sub at the reception. Who knows, they may even have chips too!!! Just remember at the reception when you sit down at your table... that person next to you is someones sister who is really their mom...and that third cousin/husband is really the anomaly in the local gene pool. I am hearing the sound of than banjos from "Deliverance" for some reason right now...

A disel generator would be a good idea to give them electricity in their house. Give it to them they will be happy that you light up their lives. Also a solar powered water heater to give them hot water. That should be a great idea too. Generators come in various sizes, so you can pick to suit your budget. All the best.

Seriously? How about a bottle of Sparkletts and a battery?

Honestly though, whatever they are interested in or need. I would think pots/pans, bath towels, typical home stuff like that would be ok... or if they already have that kind of stuff, something that reflects their interests (if they like baseball, get them tickets to a game or something).

Wow, I'm kind of surprised that people are being so rude about this. Sorry that not everyone lives up to your idea of "civilization." More power to people who can manage with the not so neccesary items that we deem as requirements!

I would suggest a nice picture frame or photo album. Or any sort of decorating item, like wall sconces. Maybe even a good book or two!

Whatever fits into their lifestyle. Why not ask them if they've thought about what type of gifts they'd like to receive. This site has inexpensive "Green" wedding gifts:
