I co run a child care. We have children from all kind of backgrounds and cultures. We invite their parents to come talk to the kids about thier culture and even bring foods or items to show the kids. we have asked all parents if they are ok with this and every single one has said yes and that they think its great that the kids are learning about other people and how they live. Well we had our yearly visit from the state. It happens that day we had a parent from Norway come visit the kids and was doing a craft with them. The lady from DHS took me aside and told me i was NOT to do that anymore and that i was to take down the posters that show people from other countries. I told her that the parents really liked what we where doing. She did not care. Do you agree with this or not? thanks!

Rabitgirl, you do have a very good point. we have known these parents for a very long time, but still. DHS lady did not say a thing about the parent being there, it was the fact that there was the posters. she said she did not want anyone to get upset by it!

Huh? I used to work in childcare also, and it sounds like what you guys are doing would make the license board jump for joy! Did she give you a reason? As far as I know, it is customary to celebrate the diversity of the families who attend your centre. I definitely think it's wrong, and if I was you I would be asking for some answers!

I think that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard! I used to work in HeadStart and this was promoted just like what your center is doing. I am also a parent and I come from a Cuban/English Heritage and my husband is Mexican....we also have Puerto Rican, Columbian, Japanese, Arab, and Bulgarian in our familes and I want my children to learn about other cultures and to be accepting of everyone regardless of thir race or cultural background. I would have been offened. I don't want my kids to be racist or ignorance. Its better that they are educated on these subjects. She doesn't agree with it because she must be a racist herself????? What race was she? and I would call down to the Agency and get further information and ask for clarification on what she asked you to do.

The lady from DHS needs to get a grip. Its great that you all are teaching the kids about diversity. Unless the poster had something obscene or any profanity, it's great to see kids getting taught to broaden their horizons. I'd tell the DHS lady that if she'd like to demand you take them down then she needs to submit it in writing to your attorney along with her reasons for being prejudiced against other cultures.

I do not agree. I will have her fired right away for making you take down the posters. I WISH!! I think it's an important part of growing up, to learn about other cultures. It teaches acceptance of something that is not of your norm. What a turd for doing that. I would ask someone over her head if this is acceptable.

Personally, I think it's a good idea. But DHS may have some legal issues surounding people who haven't been through the system to be working with kids. You haven't done background checks on these parents, they haven't been fingerprinted, etc. etc. You should check out all the legal issues before they yank your license. Just to be on the safe side.

I definitely disagree with the DHS person. Make her cite the specific rule that says you cannot educate the children you care for about world cultures. It sounds like she's full of it to me. Don't blindly comply!

I work at a daycare, and that is crazy. Children need to learn diversity. She must be a personal racist. I would call the main office and report her. I would put the posters back up and continue teaching the children.

She's nuts... I think kids should be learning about different cultures because it means they'll understand them more and there will be less discrimination and racism in future generations... Call that byotches boss and ask about it...
