I just recently got my ear pierced up towards the top and a few weeks ago was my 6 weeks deadline when i could take it out. Today i took out this one earring(not the same one i got it pierced with) and put a different one in. Then I took it out cuz it started to hurt really bad. Someone said it was kind of a purpleish blue around the hole. It's really red now and hurts like it did the 3rd day I got it when my friend accidentally bumped it with his shoulder while we were hugging. When I went to put alcohol on it tonight i felt the back of my ear and when i put little pressure on my ear this white stuff covered the hole and then started comming out of the whole! is my ear infected? or did i just mess with it too much? it really hurts and i plan to go to the doctor tomorrow...so it would be really helpful if i knew if it were infected before i make my appointment!

If you're having pain, discoloration and pus, it sure sounds like the hole is infected. Or you could be allergic to certain metals, like nickel. Your doctor might suggest that you wear hypoallergenic earrings, or those made with gold or stainless steel posts. You should also wash the ear lobes with peroxide every night and morning.

If you have redness and white stuff coming out and pain, you have an infection.

You said it was pierced "up towards the top." I assume you mean that this piercing was in the stiff part of the ear, not the earlobe. This is not a good place to get an infection. An infection involving the cartilage should be treated as soon as possible with antibiotics. Call your doctor.

There is no way you can make your piercing holes heal faster. You have to wait for the new skin that forms the hole to grow in from both the front and back of your ears until it meets somewhere inside your ears. I know six weeks may seem like forever to you, but you will live with the results of your piercing and healing for the rest of your life. This is not the time to rush things.

sounds like it.

The white stuff is probably purulent drainage indicating an infection. The 6 week deadline is a general rule and not for everyone. Also have you shared ear rings with another sibling or friend?

But from the sounds of it, I would say you probably do have an infection.

Yes, Its infected. You should be able to get advice from your piercer, but your doctor is a good option too. You will probably be givven some form of spray to clean it with daily until the infection is gone.

Always make sure your earrings are clean (you can get special cleaning sprays) before putting them in. :-)

Sounds like an infection. Please see your doctor as soon as you can. An infection in that area of the body (near the head, thus near the brain) should not be ignored or just "cleaned" with peroxide - it could become systemic (go through your blood stream) quickly, leading to menengitis or blood poisoning.

Please make an appointment to see your doctor. In the meantime, wash your hands throughly before you touch your ear or earring at all.

Peroxide to clean and an antibiotic ointment to combat the infection. Coat the earing with the antibiotic ointment and put in. For worse infections you can get some string, boil it to sanitize it, coat it with neosporin and thread it through.

If it's red, throbbing or tender and oozing pus, then, yes, it's infected.See if it's settled down by morning. It could just be sore from all the messing around with it. It's not serious either way, keep it clean.

Redness and pain are signs of infection. I would definitely have it looked at. Good luck.

its infected.. peroxide, let the bubbles get it all out, rinse with alcohol. its gonna sting... but better to clean it..
and it is possible that you hit a nerve, thats why it still hurts so much, and will be prone to infections..

i suggest you let it close, and clear up, and maybe get it re-done in another spot....
