How can marketers encourage repeat purchases/customers?

Because repeat customers are more likely the buy your products than new customers. With a new customer, you have to build the relationship from the ground up. With existing clients, the relationship is already there, the next sale is simply a matter of using that relationship to show them they need the new product.

The best way to get them to buy your product is to maintain a good relationship and show them how the product will benefit them financially (cost/benefit analysis).

It costs a lot more to find a brand new customer than to get an existing customer to place another order.

Look at a company like Lands End. They have to advertise and send millions of catalogs out to find new customers. Me, since I'm a happy customer, all they have to do is send me emails and a men's catalog once in a while and I order from them. I don't cost them much in marketing dollars.

I haven't encouraged them to join but I have encouraged them to become educated about perspectives I thought would interest them. For example, a freind of mine was struggling with the concept of the highly involved christian god she'd been taught to believe in but still thought there to be a god of some sort, so I suggested she explore the concepts of deism. A cousin of mine was looking for a spirituality that didn't revolve around theism, so I gave him a book on buddhism. Personally, I'm an agnostic atheist who feels no need to adhere to a particular religion, spirituality or morality. But for those who do feel that need, I try to help them find what they're looking for if I can.
