My Pug Delivered 6 healthy pups with no problems at all. She was doing great and then 24 hours later she is starting to pant very heavily. There is no abnormal discharge, and everything else seems fine. Puppies are eating great and she is being a great mom...why the very heavy panting?

It is a good idea to always take mom and litter to the vet post whelping, just to be on the safe side. She may have retained a placenta and/or dead puppy. This is not uncommon and can lead to raging infections...which in turn can lead to toxic milk ...which can lead to you having to take the babies away and feed them for next three weeks. Always, always, always have Mom and babies checked asap after whelp.

That being said, it could also be environmental. Are you using a "heat lamp" and/or other "heating" source near your whelping box? Sometimes in trying to keep the pups warm enough, it makes it too warm for Mom. We always place a thermometer in the whelping box and watch it closely.

By now she should be taking short breaks away from the litter. Does she pant when she is not with the puppies? Is she going potty without problems? Is she eating, and more importantly, DRINKING? Have you taken her temperature with a rectal thermometer? Is it normal?

There is a lot to this whelping process and YOU WILL LEARN, from any mistakes that you make; BUT you don't want to learn the hard way at Mom's expense. Have her checked out, if for no other reason than to put your mind at ease. Good luck.

Dog Panting After Whelping

I would recommend to gently feel her belly for any undelivered puppies. Some deny this, but if you gently place one hand on one side, and your other hand on the other and almost message around, especially up close to the underside of her spine where a pup could be hiding. Also as she delivered did you make sure she also delivered all 6 intact placentas to the puppies? What is the temp in the surrounding area where her whelping box is located, maybe you have it too hot? Also, is she doing anything other then panting, such as acting as she did while whelping the 6 pups? Has she been panting the whole 24hrs? But as others said I would recommend a vet, pugs, like most small dogs can have serious difficulties with pregnancy, whelping/recovery.

She's in pain. Could be an undelivered pup or blood loss or all sorts of things. She needs to see a vet ASAP. You may be raising these pups without a mom if you don't act quickly.

Another backyard breeder that doesnt know what they're doing. You need to take your dog to the vet before she dies of a uterine infection. If she's panting its likely shes got a fever from an infection.

She is stressed for some reason. Could be fear, pain or she isnt done delivering. I would suggest calling your vet and finding out for sure.

Dogs tend to pant really hard when they are in pain. I suggest you get her medical attention! It is possible she has internal hemorraging without visible loss of blood. Good luck!

Do you have a heat lamp in the whelping box by chance?
