Sura 5:51.

"O ye who believe! Take not Jews and Christians for your friends and protectors; they are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily God guideth not a people unjust."

If you'll read down a bit, it explains:

5:55 "Your real allies are GOD and His messenger, and the believers who observe the Contact Prayers (Salat), and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and they bow down."

5:56 Those who ally themselves with GOD and His messenger, and those who believed, belong in the party of GOD; absolutely, they are the victors.

5:57 O you who believe, do not befriend those among the recipients of previous scripture who mock and ridicule your religion, nor shall you befriend the disbelievers. You shall reverence GOD, if you are really believers.

There are many false people in every religion. It simply states to trust in God above all others.

What is there to explain? The Torah and the Bible WERE the word of God. Through corruption, Athanasius, Arius, the Council of Nicea and countless other incidednts the word had been changed so much that it lost its true holiness. That is why God sent down the Quran as the last and final confirmation of the previous scriptures to set the record straight. You can still find some good stories in both books but I am not completely confident it is the WHOLE truth. So, in essence, I'm Christian, Jew AND Muslim. But Muslim supercedes the previous 2. Peace P.s. Im going to have to agree with Affan on with his interpretation. We probably know ARabic better than you and have studied many interpretations, BUT either way it relways the same message. Yes, I can read AND God's word is never corrupt; but people lie about what they have received from God. Let me put it like this. When God first created Adam and EVe there was no huge set of rules on how to live life. It is a gradual revelation from God to us. He does not want to overburden us at one time and also wants every nation at at least one point to have a messenger. Gradually he reveals more laws to people until His message is complete (the Holy Quran) so until some one can show me the originally Injeel (Bible) that Jesus lived by then I will NOT trust any accounts of it as reliable. It is a previous message and because the Quran confirms that message I dont even find it necessary to make a distinction between God's original message (submission) and His final message because they all focused on the present scripture, which implied submission to God's will. Is that better?

(O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends…) [5:51]. Said ‘Atiyyah al-‘Awfi: “‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit went to see the Prophet and asked him: ‘O Messenger of Allah! I have numerous clients from amongst the Jews, who are ever ready to support me. However, I stand before Allah and His Messenger to absolve myself from the guardianship of the Jews. And I turn, instead, to Allah and His Messenger’. Hearing this, ‘Abd Allah ibn Ubayy said: ‘I am a man who fears the turn of events and will not absolve myself from the guardianship of the Jews’. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, then said: ‘O Abu’l-Hubab, that which you reserve to yourself of the guardianship of the Jews apart from ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit is all yours and none of it is his’. He said: ‘I accept’. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed about the two of them: (O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another) up to His saying (And thou seest those in whose heart is a disease) [5:52], i.e. ‘Abd Allah ibn Ubayy (race toward them) for support (saying: We fear lest a change of fortune befall us)”.

Justsyd said it and she isn't even Muslim.

When you are at war or in a battle, who do you put your trust in? Your own? Or those who ridicule you and want to backstab you?

First I just want to present some from Old Testaments for Christians and Jews, with respect. Kindly see below:

Deuteronomy

Kill all the civilians burn and destory their cities.
2.34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men and the women and the little ones of every city; we left none to remain.

2.35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

3.4 And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we took not from them: threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
3.5 All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides unwalled towns a great many.

3.6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city.

3.7 But all the cattle and the spoil of the cities we took for a prey to ourselves.

Show no mercy to your enemy.
5.1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee — the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou–

5.2 and when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee, thou shalt smite them and utterly destroy them. Thou shalt make no covenant with them nor show mercy unto them.

Captives and spoils of wars for the conquerers.
20.14 But the women and the little ones, and the cattle and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

Now during the war time Prophet Muhammad gave advice to Muslims trust your own people and give support to Muslims instead making friends from enemy ( war time), that may cause of leakage of important decisions and strategic points. This advice was according to commandment of God Almighty.

Even if you see current situation, ( except few True Good Followers of Prophet Jesus and Moses, pbuh), mejority of elite (so called) are leaving no chance to uppose Muslims and Islam, while Qura'n have cleare invitation for all:

Al-Qura'n 3:64:
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allâh, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allâh[11]. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that we are Muslims."

Islam teaches that all faiths have, in essence, one common message:
the existence of a Supreme Being, the one and only God, whose sovereignty is to be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to obey His teaching and commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets who were sent at various times and in many places throughout history.

Islam, An Arabic word, is rich in meaning. One important dimension is the "commitment to submit and surrender to God so that one could live in peace" peace (salaam) is achieved through active obedience to the revealed Commandments of God for God is the Source of all Peace. Commitment to Islam entails striving for peace through a struggle for justice, equality of opportunity, mutual caring and consideration for others' rights, and continuous research and acquisition of knowledge for the better protection and utilization of the resources of the universe.

Islam does not regard itself to be a new teaching, different or separate from that of other world religions. It is the re-affirmation of the ancient yet living truth of all religions which can be expressed in the following beliefs:

The Uniqueness of the one and only God who is Sovereign of the universe;
The Revelation of the teaching and commandments of God through Angels in heaven to Prophets on earth, and written in sacred writings which all have the same transcendent source; these contain the will of God which marks the way of peace for the whole universe and all of humankind;
The Day of Judgment which inaugurates the Afterlife in which God rewards and punishes with respect to human obedience to His will.
