If needed are they alerted through a cell phone/PDA or a pager?
I wouldn't think pagers since they are pretty old technology, but i'm not sure.

hello!

I'll answer that question based on our situation here in the Philippines. Way back the eighties up to mid nineties, doctors us pagers. These tiny yet durable devices are very convenient. They are easy to operate, low on energy consumption and most importantly, it would not cost a cent to page your doctor since here in the country, a local land line call is usually free. There are however problems with dead spots and some call center agents who are not so familiar with medical terms.

In the advent of the cell phones, the popularity of the pagers diminished and at the present, no one is using pagers anymore. Cell phones offered a better alternative to pagers and doctors can be informed of a medical need either by text messages or by voice call. With good coverage, anyone could be reached as long as their cell phones are working. Drawbacks of cellular phones include cost on the person sending the message, size (cellular phones are usually bulkier than pagers), and at times, invasion on the privacy of doctors.
