For years the only shotgun I had was a 20 guage and I hunted everything from quail to geese with it. (And mine wasn't chambered for 3" shells.)
On larger birds, make sure they are less than 40 yards away(preferably 20 to 30 yards) and aim for their head.
A 3" 20 guage shell holds as much shot as a 2-3/4" 16 guage.
Just make sure to use heavy loads and number 4 shot if you hunt ducks, geese, or pheasants.

Small game and big game.* Rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, Deer.* Take your shotgun to a gunsmith and have him install a Poly-choke on your shotgun so you can shoot slugs in it.* It is an adjustable choke that goes from improved cylinder to modified to full simply by twisting it with your hand.*

It's good for deer, birds, bunnies, squirrels, or anything you like pretty much. Just use buckshot instead of slugs for big game.
