so many national guard troops , and the length of deployments and the fact that we had a known army as the enemy in iraq. we were told that wmd were there, and they were not, then it was to get sadaam out , and then al qaida. are the so called police actions more profitable and convenient? i hear from the right "we are at war" , however , our congress (the people) declare war . it is a war of choice , we went in when we want it , how we want it , and where we want it . i would like to know what percent of the foot soldiers ( the ones at danger) belong to what social class? any ivy league , politician's children , wealthy family? well, how many small companies have overprofited from this war? our sons daughters go in for an ideal , that sadly is for misguided intentions of power and wealth of a few . is george bush "ceasar"? he would send the legions to conquer when things did not look so good for him in the senate and rome . well, we should say "hail to ceasar , mr president" !

Greetings. regardless of how people have been led to feel about it, we were not threatened by Iraq or Afghanistan and according to the things now becoming known, not even by 9/11 which was staged by our own leaders. Congress could not declare war, under our laws, unless the U.S. was in danger of actually being invaded. we were not. we had no legal justification for invasion. we violated American law, U.N. law and international law in our pre-emptive invasion. Congress could not declare war without justification, so they illegally gave their power to the president. No where in the constituion does it say that congress or the senate can give their power away. If anyone still belives that we are in a just war then that is only proof that we are a nation in desperate need of a new education system to teach our children logic. Our troops are dying in Iraq because of that ignorance on the part of many of our propaganda clouded citizens. remember that propaganda is aimed at the 10 year old mind, that will tell you a lot about those who believe what propaganda tells us about anything. We even have people who actually believe that we are there killing and getting killed to defend America. From what? Iraqi's riding their camels across the ocean and invading Florida? And there is no "we" in this war or criminal invasion and occupation in Iraq. it is republican only, not the people. "we" only die in it. Don't blame America for the criminal actions of the government or its flunkies. As for the military. the usual. lower classes. no rich senators sons or presidents daughters. supposed to be only one senators son in the Army at all. and he is definitely not in combat. As for Bush being Ceasar, though he could be since we as the Roman empire was when Julius was Ceasar, are in decline. I would say more along the lines of having the illusion of being Adolf Hitler, the great war lord who he follows in most everything. other then being a alcoholic and drug addict of course. Hitler was neither. he was also a vegetarian and accepted no pay for being dictator.

Does the US have a draft I havn't heard of yet? I should probably know so I can enlist earlyer than I was planning too. People who join the military do so on their own and their financial standing might alter their decision because they have no need of financial aid for college but that has nothing to do with who is placed in the fight. And there is no one to declare war on. Were fighting for our survival and right to beleive anything we want in this country. So yes we are fighting for an ideal but not one that is just the presidents, it's one that is in the essential makeup of us being Americans. An ideal that we can go to sleep at night and not have to worry about a plane crashing into our homes. Comparing a dictatorship with a democracy is not one I would call very logical. Bush was elected twice... the second time by both popular and electoral votes... suck it up, stop whining, and wait till 2008 when you will get another chance to vote.

Mr. Bull, there has not been a "formal" declaration of war since WWII. There have been plenty of wars, which were authorized by congress, just as this one was, but no formal declaration that it was in fact war, initiated by presidents of both political parties.

Don't know why but that's how it's been for over 50 years, since democrat President Truman sent troops to Korea.

A formal declaration of war would be political suicide for those in congress. So far he American people have been content to allow our boys and girls to sacrifice their actual lives instead of making the politicians take a stand.

The resolution permitting the use of Force fits the form as a declaration of war. But the President as Commander in Chief is entitled to use whatever force deemed nessary to defend the US from attack.

Because a declaration of war comes from congress and that would require that they actually have the guts to put their name on a vote. Instead they abdicated their power to the president so they could sit back and critisize when things go wrong and take credit for giving him authority when things go right. Congress didn't declare war as a way of hedging their bet.

The rest of your question is a rant and I am not going to waste my time on it.

How do you declare war on ideals?

We are not at war with Iraq or Afghanistan. And yet, the Congress overwhelmingly supported the war when it started.

Because we are not fighting a country, we're fighting an idea -- terrorism. Terrorists work in small groups, and don't wear uniforms, and don't follow the Geneva conventions, and don't move in squads. Against whom should we formally declare war?

What's that? NOBODY, in this case? I agree with you. And I, too, am tired of our imperialistic president.

Hello everyone.

I'm a soldier in the U.S. Army and have been for 3 and 1/2 yrs.
I re-enlisted for 5 more years while in Afghanistan and I'll end up with 8 total yrs. if I
don't re-up again. Anyways I wanted to tell you all the truth about
these so called troop reductions that are being talked about. Ever
wonder why the Government always says we are withdrawin so many
thousands of troops but somehow the troop level stays the same? It's
because they are lying to you and also telling you the truth at the
same time! Every time they say they are pulling out oh 5000 troops,
they do. What they don't put on the front page is that another 5000
troops are moving in to take their place. It's all part of the force
rotation. Don't let them fool you! If you truly want troop reductions
the look not only at how many troops are coming home, but how many are
leaving home as well. I and my unit are scheduled to go to Iraq later
this year...to replace those that are coming home which are part of the
current troop "reductions". Help us. WE ARE DYING FOR YOU!
