Today I had to put my 4 month old black and tan coonhound to sleep. I want to know more about why my puppy died than just "because his chances of survival was really low". Well, here are the details. When we brought my dog into the vet's place, he was really weak. He couldn't even move. His head was lying down, and he seemed like he was suffering. He couldn't even keep his mouth closed. Anyway long story short, the doctor told us that his body temperature was so low enough not to be registered by the machine, that he was very skinny, and that he didn't respond to any stimuli. Basically, he was in a critical state. The doctor also ran a test to see if he had parvo. It came out to be negative. What I'm confused about is why did this happen? He was just fine during the weekends. He was pretty active. Also he was eating well, until about Monday. We wondered why he was just lying around, and not eating anything. Then he threw up more than he usually did. Help. I wanna know what happened.

More info: We got him for free. The lady that gave him to us said that he was one of four that survived from a litter of 10. He threw up occasionally. He had only his first and second set of vaccinations. We were gonna get his rabies shots but then this happened. His diet consisted of Purina Puppy Chow, Alpo, some rice, steak bones (well just to chew), and various Filipino foods.

We fed him every day, three times a day. Even when he was sick, we still tried to feed it but it wouldn't just open its mouth. Last night I thought he was going to be fine because he seemed more awake than two days ago. He was looking at each one us.
Also, sometimes he would choose not to eat, and when he gets hungry, he would gobble up the whole bowl.

Hmm. The doctor couldn't really give us any information without analyzing and charging us. I know it seems selfish, but we don't have the money for analyzing, and xrays, and all that stuff. The doctor even said that he wouldn't have a chance to survive even if he went through all that. And Paul C don't jump to conclusions about this situation. I'm asking for help not criticism.

One last detail. About two days ago when he was sick, he hid behind the shed. He was just laying there in the thick grass not wanting to be anywhere near us, even though we provided food and water and everything else. My dad thought that he gave up living.

I really appreciate your support. The mistake here was that we waited too long. But Bruno is already gone. And thanks for your help.

I'm very sorry about your puppy. Just some things that are coming to mind: possibly lyme disease, all it takes is one tick. Maybe distemper?

Get another dog. Like humans, dogs get emotionally attached to each other. Your older dog was like an older sibling to your 2 year old dog. You should take your dog on walks, and do some fun stuff with him or her. Like get it a new toy of it's favorite kind. And then get a new dog. But the new dog should be a bit older than the younger one, so it gives the younger one the feeling of an older sibling around again. P.S., I'm sorry about your loss. Hope you and your dog feel better

I am so sorry for your loss.

When puppies that young get sick, they can go downhill very fast.

Could he have gotten into something that caused intestinal blockage? That causes vomiting and they stop eating and drinking. I thought of this because puppies get into everything.

Just know for the future, if a puppy doesn't eat or drink for a day, take them to the vet immediately. Even one day can make the difference for survival.

He could have had distemper and you say he started to go south on Monday and here it's Thursday. Without a temp that even registered by the time he was at the vets they didn't even have a chance to save him. If he didn't have any fat reserve (skinny) to help him get through he just didn't even have a chance. So very sad...I'm sorry

Sorry about your loss. The only thing that comes to my mind is that maybe the mother was sick with something and she passed it on to her babies. Talk to the breeder you got it from to see if the other puppies survived. Also talk to your vet to try and find out more.

Sounds like distemper, which they get from their mother while still nursing, and without the early puppy shots at 6 weeks and 8 weeks you can't beat it later. Nothing you could have done, sorry to hear you went through that.

I think of low blood sugar, aneimia, or even something wrong genetically/physiologically (since only 4 out of 10 pups made it). I second the necropsy idea-- best way to get info, although sometimes they still cant' give you a definite answer.

Very sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry you lost your puppy. If he seemed healthy before Monday, and didn't have parvo, I wonder if he ate something that made him sick? Did the vet give you any clues at all?

I'm really sorry about your loss it must be hard. That's what happens when you get puppies from a unknown breeder. Next time get a puppy from a good reputable breeder. The breeders of this puppy weren't giving the puppy proper care.

I'm so sorry about your baby!

Your vet would have to answer this. I'd suggest you talk to him about a necropsy.
