Baking powder is used in baked items to give them height. It is also used when you cook beans - supposedly to remove the gas from them but unfortunately it also destroys some of the vitamins.

Baking powder is also used in the refrigerator to remove odors so your slice of cake doesn't smell and taste like the onion in the drawer.

It is also used to clean pans and countertops without scratching them.

Baking powder is made with either cornstarch or potato starch, bicarbonate of soda, phosphates, and sulfates. As you can see, there is baking soda in baking powder.
