I'm so sick of people who are pit bull supporters trying to justfy this breed maiming people by saying "Oh but chihuahuas bite too." "Pomeranians can be vicious." ect ect do you not realize how stupid that sounds? Come on that's like comparing a BB gun to a bazooka! Let us take a moment shall we? Pom attacks someone they need a bandaid one or two stitches at most, pit bull attacks they get thier face ripped off or die! Chihuahua goes after a five year old the child kicks it away or a parent kicks it away, pit bull goes after a five year old they are lucky someone near by is strong enough to take the dog down if not the child is mauled and scared for life or dies. See the difference??

darlyngirl: The whole comparing a dangerous breed to men thing is really lame too---there is no comparison between these two problems. A dog breed is one issue human crime is another you can't treat different species the same. Are you trying to be a dog or something??

Shanna: If a 6wk old was lieing around unattended that was bad PARENTING and even at that I don't believe it killed the child, I never saw that story.

birdgirl: To begin with I DO enjoy hearing other peoples opinions and I also state my own and I do try to have fun here---open your eyes I have not attacked anyone yet look at all the attacks I have recieved! ( is this the pit owners acting like thier dogs?)
Do I think it's OK for small dogs to attack children? No. Do I think it's a whole different situation if it's a pom or a pit? Heck yeah! Anyone with any sense can see the risk statistics are a lot more favorable if it's a pom attacking. That's like would you rather chance a catagory 1 hurricane or a catagory 5? I've researched a lot since the time she attacked and I've become aware this is NOT an isolated case this is the NORM with this breed, if it was not the NORM for this breed to attack and turn on thier owners ect I'd of said ok she is a bad apple but this is common--so why would I as an intelligent human with experience and statistics glaring before me not conclude that this is a dangerous, unnessacary breed?

Was I hurt and mad at the time it occured? Heck yeah! Who wouldn't be? I'd poured time, love and money in a dog I cared deeply for only to have her turn on me, it was similar to a parent raising a child only to have him walk out at 18 and never look back...but her attack was several years ago and I've since moved on, recovered and now have two precious little pomchis as some people call them. You may not agree with me about the danger of the pit bull breeds but that neither makes you right or me wrong.

I see what you're saying. Its too bad other people have to be sooo rude in their responses. My apologies for them.
In my opinion any dog can be vicious, pit, chihuahua, lab, etc. I do agree that there is no comparing how much damage a pit can do vs. a toy dog. A toy may leave a wound needing stitching, a full grown pit or other large breed can KILL.
The example given where a pom killed an infant is completely irrelevant. A child should NEVER be left alone with a pet of any kind, cat, dog, etc. because of the risks involved. That was a good example of terrible judgment and bad parenting.

http://www.forpeteyssake.com/fallfromgra... Read that before you say OMG pit bulls should never have existed. We've done HUGE disservice to this breed.

Can you even pick out the Pit Bull http://www.forpeteyssake.com/pitgame.htm...

All dogs no matter the size are capable of severe and deadly bites.

As to pit bull types, the statistics were:

In 1995 of 22 fatalities, 9 were pit bull types;

What about the 13 fatal attacks that year?

in 1996, of 35, 3 were pit bull types;

How about these other 32 fatal attacks?

in 1997, of 30, 6 were pit bull types;

Another 24 missing breeds there.

in 1998, of 15, 5 were pit bull types;

in 1999, of 42, 8 were pit bull types.

Some of these pit bull typeswere roaming in packs, some were unsocialized, in some a child was left unattended, and in some the dogs were chained.

"in some a child was left unattended"

Hmm Where was the parents common sense? Children shouldn't be left unattended with ANY animal.

Shall I continue giving you FACTS and not a bunch of media hype?

In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

How long before they come after YOUR breed?

I've worked with pit bulls, and pit mixes, and never met one I didn't like. They've all been sweeties that wouldn't hurt a fly. On the other hand I've met many a viscous lap dog, as well labrador retrievers who would sooner bite the hand that feeds it then be petted. Sorry you had a bad experience, perhaps you got your dog from byb or whatever. You can't judge an entire breed by the actions of a few, just as you can't judge a race by the actions of a few.

Breedism is the same as racism.

Common sense isn't all that common it seems.

Pitbulls were never bred to attack people - just other dogs, so there is nothing inherently dangerous about them for humans.

Your point is that large dogs can do more damage than small ones,usually. This is true to a point, so would you outlaw all large dogs? What is your cut off - 35 pounds, 50?

As to small dogs not doing much damage, you are dead wrong on that one - a little dog can easily maim or kill an infant or small child - or even a human who is incapacitated. It all comes down to the "common sense" of not purposely breeding aggressive bloodlines - of any breed and not training dogs to be aggressive towards humans - ever.
All too many people want big dogs who are "bad" to make themselves feel dangerous and with it - a fad among gangsta rappers and other such idiots.

Then the reverse of that is the sweet little matron who thinks that Fifi or Fluffy is adorable when the 2 pound monster barks and bares his teeth at people.

Neither is acceptable - and both is the fault of breeders and dog owners.

I really don't have an ax to grind either way here, I have shepherds and I have little mini dachshund and both breeds need to well socialized and trained.

Why blame the dogs for the lack of "common sense", or any kind of sense or responsible behavior of the humans who breed or train them?

So when they ban and kill off all the pit bulls what next? Those same idiots are going to find another breed and this scenario will start all over.

I am not for banning a breed. I am for punishing the owners. And the harsher the better.

As an ex animal control officer I have seen vicious dogs of many different breeds. And behind that idiot dog was an even bigger idiot owner. And yes pit bulls will do more damage than a small dog. So what about rotts, dobies, Dane's, Shepherd's, cockers on and on and on.

No one is really born with common sense, so the common sense hasn't really gone anywhere. It's still around, but everyone feels like they're invincible, so they don't think it applies to them. It could also be the way they're raised. If they haven't been educated about, say, sexual protection, then they won't have common sense for that subject. It could be that they were never taught the basic background information about the subject, or never saw the people they were around taking precautions. It could be the previous generation's fault as well, for not being a good example. It's remarkable how many people lack "common" sense. It's not so common anymore, is it? It could be that they're just exaggerating, too.

Yes I see the difference. I also see the Chi owner telling their dog to "Get Em" where the Pit owner (if they are responsible) never has to worry about this people friendly breed. I would never own a "Pit" (Am-Staff, Bully breed, etc.) simply because they can be quite stubborn and I like a dog I can bond with like my Labradors. But do you realize that by allowing people to freak out over one breed now they are attacking Doberman's, and even Akita's?? Where's it going to stop? Next thing you know all the large breed dogs will be outlawed. If we let one thing slide another will (and indeed HAS gone). Not everyone needs to have the breed just as any other breed isn't suited to all people. If we would understand that this wouldn't even be a problem.
Edit: These dogs were bred to fight other dogs and to not bite the people that pulled them apart. So it's obvious that they are not people aggressive to begin with.

For someone who states in their profile that they like to hear what other people have to say...it sure seems like you are shoving YOUR opinion down everyones throats! You also claim you are here to "have fun". Do you find it fun calling people stupid? Also, are you downplaying small dogs attacking people? NO dog should attack people, just because they are small does not mean they should be allowed to attack people..this seems to be what you are implying. Is it okay for a pom or chihuahua to rip a childs eye out...but it is more tragic if a pitbull does it? And are you saying the small dog should be allowed to continue to attack the child but a pitbull should be put down for it? You are the one that seems to not be able to tell the difference....any dog that bites no matter what the breed should not be allowed to continue this behavior. Also, seems like you are basing your opinions on pitbulls on your ONE experience. Just because your dog attacked you...you assume all pitbulls behave this way. Let me ask you this...if your dog was a cocker spaniel or a german shepherd, or a labrador and it attacked you...would be be spewing hate for those breeds all over the site?? I don't believe you would be..I think you would just think this one dog had a problem and you would probably own that breed again. I think you are hurt and mad that your own dog attacked you so you are taking it out on the entire breed.

pitts are the fad now. everyone wants one because they CAN be vicious. and yes any dog can be trained to be vicious. a few years ago it was german shepherds. its not that there are more vicious pitts its the fact that there are more people who own then, and raise/train them improperly. there are people who mate their pitts who were trained to be vicious and that is just plain irresponsible. any dog can attack without warning, dont just place all blame on a pitt. i personally own two american bulldogs, who are banned in many states/counties. but they are the biggest babies ever and would never hurt anyone, my boyfriends daughter is now 4 (my dogs are 2 and 1 and we have had them since puppies) and she can do what she wants to them whether its play in their food, pull their ears, beat on them (if they chew her toys), and jump off the couch onto them. there are many people who do have children and will adopt a dog not knowing their past and this is where many problems come from. many people also dont realize that dogs are usually provoked, this is something to remember as well. and in no way am i saying it is okay for a dog to bite or attack and if it ever happened to us then you better believe something is going to be done about it. ohhhhh and dont forget about the people who are like ooohhhh what a cute/sweet dog and they dont know the dog but proceed to try and touch it anyway and pull back a bleeding hand. children should be taught not to go near a dog they dont know without a parent around and the dogs owner present and adults should know better. i could go on for days about this but im gonna go now

good question about the common sense, pit bulls are not mean dogs as a breed...just today i was sitting down at work on a break, drinking lemonaid in the shade and a pit bull came right up to me and wanted to be petted...a very sweet and social dog...they are just another breed, a chihuahua can be a killer if treated badly enough, this pit bull's owner is a very nice kid who loves animals and likes people so his dog is going to be the same way. i have a friend with a newfounland that is a very social dog...and i've seen snauzers that could tear a man's leg off and were mean enough to do just that...size doesn't mean much when it comes to dogs, they can either hurt and maim you bad or they won't...depends on their raising and how they are treated and socialized.
