I don't understand how we can send the message to the masses that killing is wrong, and we "prove" this point by, um, killing people. It has never made much sense to me.

Boys and girls don't get the death penalty!

In the legal justice system, the death penalty was reserved for someone who had viciously taken the lives of others, not for having bad ethics.

The Bible says to limit your "justice" to only ONE eye for an eye, only ONE tooth for a tooth, and only ONE life for a life. It wasn't saying you MUST take revenge, it was limiting the revenge you COULD take, but Jesus clarified these things by saying that love is much better than revenge. Jesus said to bless those who hurt you, etc.

But some will still take it to mean they can execute a murderer.

Well, there IS "public justice", and the public MUST be protected against murderers, but as far as PRIVATE justice, Jesus taught the way of forgiveness.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that there is one place where the death penalty is absolutely needed - high treason. It has always been punishable by death. (I'm NOT talking about speaking out against your government, I mean doing everything in your power to overthrow the government, or damage or destroy it's affectiveness, such as what happened on 9/11, etc.)

The death penalty is revenge disguised as justice and sanctioned by the government. And I don't think its an effective deterrent for murderers because people continue to get sent to death row at steady rates and most murders are committed in the heat of the moment, when people aren't really thinking about long term consequences.

Is there a better way?

Perhaps, but its not a method that is available in the present, although scientists are working on something similar. They are currently working on deep brain implant behavior modification. The idea is to surgically implant a small electrical device in the brain to help regulate emotions by setting off charges at the appropriate times and places, which could be a treatment for depression, bi polar, schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Maybe the same thing could be applied to emotions of anger and violent aggression that drives the murderer. In the future, perhaps people who misuse their aggressive impulses will have them taken away through implants that make them largely incapable of violent behavior.

Death penalty: Justice when the evidence is just (proved beyond a reasonable doubt).

revenge will never be called justice. revenge will end up 100 times worse for the victim or their family than the offender.

sometimes jail/prison is the only way. victim and offender mediation could help. some form of restitution could help also. half way house. mental help.

depending on the nature of the crime. if it comes to the death penalty then there is no turning back.

It could be justice, but I don't support the death penalty because we are human and we make mistakes. If we make a mistake in a death penalty case, then somebody who is innocent of the crime dies, and there's no way to bring that back.

Death penalty?
Only if it is Deserved.
And ONLY if there is NO DOUBT WHAT-So-Ever of their Guiltyness.

GOD gave us the Authority to Make Laws.

Tell them about Jesus first, give them some Time to Think about it, not too long now.

When a crime reaches the death penalty stage, ethics lessons no longer apply. They are not boys and girls. They are a menace to society. Kill them before they kill again. Might be you they kill.

Justice is not about reform. Its about getting what's coming to you.
