Here in the U.S., there was a law passed in Jan 2000. It stated that all flooring surfaces must be priced universally, by the square foot, so that all flooring surfaces prices could be equally compared in the same increment. Carpet is sold in the width the manufacturer makes for that style of carpet. 12', 15', or 13'6". You must purchase a full width by whatever length you would like over 3'. 12' x 3' is the minimum cut to be ordered unless you can find a remnant piece of carpet.

They price it by the square foot nowadays. Used to be by the yard but when carpet started averaging 20 bucks a yard, they went with foot. Possibly most folks understand the concept of square feet better than yards anyhow. To get the yards, simply divide square feet by 9.

If a room size does not fit well with the proposed carpet ( 14 foot wide room vs 12 foot wide carpet) it will take more carpet to seam the pieces in without " quarter turning". The run of the carpet needs to be all the same direction and the seems should be where the least foot traffic will be.
