I had a root canal when I was 16 years old and I have not had any problems with it since. My tooth was infected so I was in alot of pain but when I left the dentist and the numbing was gone my tooth did not hurt ever again. It was worth it! It is always important to keep your natural teeth because when you remove a tooth your other teeth will shift and move into the space over time so your bite will not be the same as it was.

I've had several over the last 20 years on the same tooth (no lie). I cracked the tooth when I was about 10--skateboarding accident-- and I've had to have a root canal at least every 5 years. To me, the root canals have never, ever been painful. On the contrary. The pain leading up to the root canal has been the issue. Having said that-- if it so happens that I'll need another root canal, I'm not going to do it. My dentist and I have already decided to just extract the tooth and be done with it.

I have had a LOT of dental work in the past few years, and have actually lost track of root canals. I think there were 3 or 5. Whatever.
Anyway, I have NEVER had any kind of pain before or after, and a couple dentists don't understand this. Don't men have lower pain tolerance? I took a couple Advils afterwards, one at a time, 4 hours apart, just to stop any pain that MIGHT have come. I had prescriptions for one of those high powered easily addictive pain pills -- never even filled them.
All of my root canals have been successful, never once got a dry socket. Just be careful to do EXACTLY as the dentist says afterwards. No straws, no chewing in that area, and so on.
Good luck!

Unfortunately, I have had several root canals. It's a long process but was not painful for me. I did have some lingering pain for several weeks involving a top front tooth that was just sensitive. That same tooth has darkened with time, but there are all sorts of bleaching alternatives. Having a root canal preserves your teeth, which is certainly preferable to having them pulled. Those are your choices.

No it wasn't painful at all (well for me) the only time i felt pain was after the root canal. The down side to geting a root canal done is that it takes about 3 hours. The pain lasted for just 1 day.
