Ser is used when describing physical characteristics (height, hair color, ethnicity, color, length, etc), origin (country, city, state of birth, etc), nationality, (american, german, etc) mental descriptions (smart, dumb, etc), with the word "feliz" (only with that one "soy feliz") and with divorce (soy divorciada), Times, dates, etc, Relationships, Opinions, Deadlines.
physical characteristics:
Soy pelirroja (I'm redheaded)
Ella es alta (she is tall)
Tus ojos son verdes (your eyes are green)
Sus piernas son largas (her legs are long)
Origin
Yo soy de los EE.UU (I'm from the USA)

Estar is used to describe locations, conditions that might change like moods, state of being (good, fine, bad, sick, etc), marital status minus divorce or widowed (married, single, taken, engaged, alone), present physical appearance, (looking good, looking bad, etc), used with verbs to express action (to be cooking, to be running, to be singing)

You use ser when sth is fixed.like
I am john.=soy juan.
I am from brazil=soy de brasil.
those are fixed thiongs that won't change.
estar is used when you're speaking of emotions,and other things that fluctuate.(Ser is also used when you speak of occupacions:i.e. I'm a dentist=soy dentista.i'm a student=soy estudiante ect.)
I'm tired=estoy cansado
It's raining=Esta lloviendo
you notice that either of these are likely to change at any moment.
Simply think ser=sth that doesn't change
estar =sth that flutuates,like the weather,emotions

Yo soy Listo ( i am smart)
Yo seré rápido ( i will be fast)
Yo estoy ( i am ( at somewhere))
Yo estoy listo ( i am ready)
Yo estoy quieto ( i am quiet (standing still))
Estar means to be at somewhere or at some mood, shape etc, not just location, ser ser means to be the way you are all the time not like when you say Yo estoy enojado= means that in that moment you are mad but later you prolly wont, if you say Yo soy enojon (a am grumpy) means that you often, or all the time gets mad, did i explained myself?
