My dog is 3 and has had several heats but this is th first since she had puppies a year ago. Lat week I took her to the vet for allergies and he said he thought she was coming into heat. She had some blackish blood in her privates (he looked because I asked if he thought she was in heat). Anyway nothing all week then today she has started bleeding and it is thick and dark. She is taking Clavomax for a possible infection. When she didn't start heat I took her back and he didn't know what it was so put her on an anitbotic. I really don't think anything is wrong with her though just her heat is funky. Has anyone had a dog with a heat like this? Thanks, sorry for the long winded explaination!

Since she may have pyometra (an infected uterus) I would take her back to the vet, or at least call and talk to them about this. There are two different kinds of pyometra, open and closed. In a closed pyo, pus builds up in the uterus until it ruptures. In an open pyo, the pus drains. The pus isn't the normal color in a pyo, since there is blood there. Since your dog is already on an antibiotic, this might also affect the type of discharge she has. Blackish blood is never normal in a heat cycle (it can be after whelping puppies, but even then it usually has a greenish tinge), especially in the first week of heat. Please talk to your vet, since if this is a pyo, your dog's life is at stake if it is left untreated. We can't give you a "for sure" answer here, because we can't see your dog, and don't have any diagnostic tools. Hope she's OK.

I would take her and get another opinion. One of my labs had strange bleeding similar to what you have described and she had pyometra

My vet that I had at the time did not think there was anything wrong with her, just normal bleeding from her heat but I did not think it was normal so I took her to another vet and he took blood tests and knew she had prometra ( infection in the uterus)

She had to be spayed immediately ...

Don't wait on this, doesn't sound like normal bleeding

Good luck to you ...

It sounds like pyometra to me. She will have to be spayed. That happens when they have several heats, especially if they don't have puppies during them. I know you said she just had puppies. Either way she needs to be spayed. You may want to see another vet as yours didn't seem to know what the heck was going on!!!

This sounds more like a post partum bleeding- black to greenish- a retained fetus that decomposed, your female could be septic and in need of more than Clavomax. I suggest you try a second opinion and get an ultrasound and xray. Good luck.
