NEVER - feed your dog a species appropriate diet of raw meat, edible bones and offal and you will never have to do this either. The large chunks of meat will both floss the teeth and massage the gums while the bones scrape plaque and tarter of the teeth. The only ones you may have to wipe over occasionally are the canines but this is usually caused by the meat pieces being too small for the dog to rip and tear.
Over 80% of commercial fed dogs (whether on tinned or dry) have periodontal disease by the age of three. This can be a serious problem with proven links to other health issues. These statistics are then used by the same manufacturers to make and promote more unneccessary and inappropriate products (think greenies, denta-bones, nylabones, toothpaste etc)

Every day - or at least try to everyday. They actually LOVE it. I got a toothpaste/brush set from the vet and it was only 4 bucks. The toothpastes are usually meat flavored or something the dogs like. IF possible start when they are young so they get used to it.

i brush my dogs teeth when she gets a bath or whenever i have the time. She loves it because her toothpaste tastes like chicken (or so the tube says) she also gets dental chews at least once a week and she has sparkling white teeth.

About 3 times a week.
Use dog toothpaste. They sell it at Petco, Petsmart, and other petstores. Human toothpaste isn't good for dogs.
