Is it possible to get a good career job without going to college if you have a good work record and that you've been at your job for almost a decade? I'm 27 years old and I've been working at the same job since I was 19 years old and I work at a department store, I hve a very good work record and I haven't called in sick for 2 and a half years now.

It will depend on your field. For instance, you do not need a degree to push a post hole digger (phd, get it). But, you will need a degree if you want to practice law or engineering.

If you have a great job, with a great company - stick with it. If they are willing to promote you without a degree then stick with it.

However, look down the road and ask yourself, what will I want when I am 40 years old? Will I want to move to an industry that will hire me without a degree?

The sad thing is, at least in my industry, there are many companies that will not consider you without a masters now.

But, on the bright side, 10 years experience in the same field is about the same as a degree. But, when you are 50, do not be surprised after looking back you see the missed opportunities or income because you did not get a degree.

Yes, it's even more possible than if you get a degree depending on what you wanted to be, I will probably get multiple thumbs down for this but I went to college, and it's overrated. My husband went to college for computer science, and when he graduated he couldn't find hardly any work, especially work with benefits. Not heard of, but had been while he was in school. Well, he started working this job recently where he makes awesome pay, this is mind you five years after we graduated, he gets excellent benefits but his boss knows less than he does. She didn't go to college, in fact, she came straight from the floor and somehow worked her way up. So he's paying for a loan that we will be indebt for the next twenty years, she's not. There is you an example, it's not always about college, a lot of times it's about experience. The same thing happened for several other guys he works with they started working at this company straight out of highschool, and are now making the same amount he is, if not more.

Yes and no.

Many good companies promote from withing. The problem is that some companies don't.

In any job you have to be doing things to prove that you are capable of promotion. Sometimes that means taking initiative or extra responsibilities without extra pay.

Other strategies including study. Not necessarily a degree, but there are lots of short courses you can do, or pratical courses at community colleges that will help your chances of promotions.

The problem is that managers tend to promote people like themselves. Because large store managers are often college educated they will recruit college people in roles that could be done by someone with experience.

Decide what you want, tell people what you are interested in. Work towards it in your own time, and the world will life you up to glory.

Why not just get the loan and repay it back when you get a good job. You dont even have to pay them back until like 9 months after graduation. You can live good while in college and whats $200 a month for a $10,000 loan? The job might intefer with your school. Remember, your education is more important than the job. Quit the job, thats what the loans are for take advantage. Your lucy, some people dont even qualify for loans.

Yes, it is possible, but the key would be to in the right working environment that will offer long term growth opportunities, or in the very least, chances to learn valuable skills that you can use elsewhere in another company. This is when you can be on track for a promising career, just keep setting new professional goals.

Yes. Dave Thomas the founder of Wendy's had no high school diploma until just a few years before he died. You have to work hard and don't expect it to be handed to you. You have dept. store experience and maybe you could start a store maybe part time. Your still young and still have a very good chance of success if you put forth the effort. Good luck to you.

No, unless you're like Bill Gates and the like. At the end of the day, even if you are very good and experienced, the lack of formal schooling will catch up on you Supervisory and managerial positions require certain understating on leadership, operational/process management, quality improvements concepts, to name a few.

Take evening classes, before you know it, you've earned your degree.
