You know what - I believe the best puppy is a mongrel not a pedigree and bearing this in mind I think the best way to get a puppy is to visit your local RSPCA (or Dog Pound). I am sure they will have lots of great puppies for you to choose from. Bear in mind that puppies grow into dogs and sometimes biggggg dogs so choose carefully. They look so cute when they are little but it is important to make sure "he or she" is the one for you. You might even consider getting one that is not a puppy but around 1 year old as they have then been through the crying and chewing up everything in sight. A friend of mine did that and first up they though they had a very bad dog but in no time at all he was just what they wanted. At least that way you have a fair idea of what he will look like and how big he will get.

Go to the pound and get one; you are saving a life by doing so. If you want a purebreed, you're unlikely to find a healthy one for less than $500.

I'm always wary of people who say they want a puppy but are on a tight budget. I don't know if you've already factored this into your consideration, but puppies are way more expensive than their "starting" cost. You might pay $200 for a pound puppy now... just be aware that obedience classes, puppy vaccinations, regular trips to the vet and eventually getting him neutered are all things a responsible pet owner should do and will run you up to way more than $500. WAY more. Not to mention things like collar, leash, bowls and dog food to last you years.

The best way to get a puppy or a dog is to check out reputable breeders. If the puppy's parents are pedigree - it means that they are well kept dogs. Good Breeders can tell you the family tree of the dog - if your dog has a genetic problem you can trace it back. Also, breeders are better than petshop because they keep their dogs in a kernel with other dogs so they can be socialized at an early age.

Go to your local shelter. There are lots of puppies and dogs waiting for a new home without the big price tag. Most will be around $100 or so, some a little more some a little less.

Finding a puppy at a shelter is a good way to get a puppy that needs a loving home and a second chance. Cross breeds like you find at a shelter can also be healthier than a purebred dog because they can have whats called "hybrid vigor" - which means that they basically get the best of both parents.

If you really have you heart set on a purebred puppy please, please don't buy it from a pet store. Dogs in pet stores often come from back yeard breeders (BYB) or from puppy mills who only care about making money from their dogs.

If you want a purebred dog go to a breeder and get one from them - making sure that you can see at least one of the parents so that you can get an idea of what the parents are like. The American Kennel Club website lists breeds and breeders and dogs that aren't show quality are often sold for less than the show quality dogs. http://www.akc.org/

Breeders are also likely going to be able to put you in contact with purebred rescue groups who rescue purebred dogs and place them in homes rather than putting them into shelters.

As you are going to hear..over and over..go to a local shelter they have dogs of all ages. Our local Humane Society had tons of puppies..ages 3 months and up...it may take you a few trips to find the dog you want...just a tip, we adopted a 10 month old dog.still a puppy (technically).she is sweet and was housebroken, walks nice on a leash..sleeps through the night....good luck

Go out and LOOK AT PUPPIES. Free puppies are free. Bought puppies are paid for. Best friends for life are spontaneous. (YOU KNOW FOR REAL RIGHT NOW ) So look for a best friend. ( I know that you will be their best friend)Dogs love to follow, and wait for you to get home, and wear silly hats when you laugh, sleep on the floor when they are too big for the bed, and be just as happy to see you if you bring home an A or a D. Love him and he will love you ten times back. Spay or Neuter your puppy as I have done with my two cats, they used to be males, but more loyal than the pope.

Petfinder.com, your local shelter or rescue group, or ask a local vet clinic if they have animals up for adoption. (My vet works with a rescue group, so there are usually animals available for adoption there.)

There is no such thing as a "free" dog or cat... even routine vet bills, and things like food, treats, toys, collars, leashes, beds, etc. add up. So just realize that you will end up spending several hundred dollars anyway, even if you don't purchase a $500 dog.

Adoption is great! It's low cost and you will feel great about saving one more dog from a tragic death. Check out your local animal rescue or go on petfinder.com which is this rescue website.
