Is it cheaper to do the work and buy the material yourself, or to have someone do it for you?

That would depend on the type of work you are going to do and your level of expertise to do it. IF you dont know what you are doing it could end up costing you even more to have another person fix your mistakes.and some improvements require licensed contractors and inspections and permits.
