It is odd. She is normally a happy dog. She is about a year and a half and my other dog is a pug! They constantly play and are very good to each other but if the cocker has something in her mouth (usually a sock) she begins to cry. She still carries it but it almost looks like she is looking for a place to put the sock. She will cry for a few seconds and then walks into another room. She has a ton of toys laying around the house but it is the sock that makes her cry..... I don't think they smell that bad??

My 1 year old pug/beagle does the same thing when she has a 'high prize' item such as a bone or pigs ear. In her case, I have found that she is looking for a place to 'bury' her special item, especially in a place that the other dog can't get it. If the sock is extra stinky, the dog may think it is something worth hiding and is just seeking a special spot.

Is she spayed? If she isn't ,she could be having a false pregnancy, which will cause them to do this.If she isn't spayed, then it's best to have it done because once a dog has one false pregnancy, they will usually have them after every heat, which can cause uterine infections or mammary tumors. On the other hand,if she is spayed, then she might just be a nutty dog, like my German shepherd, who does the same thing with toys, shoes, and other items, and she was spayed at 5 months, and never had a heat.I think some dogs just have a very strong mothering instinct, and maybe your dog just loves the scent of your son,and looks upon him as one of her puppies!

i'm just wondering if your son is at school or not at home when your dog does this i might be wrong cause i'm not an expert but it makes me wonder if the dog has bonded with your son and maybe walking around the house with the sock in it's mouth greiving cause he cant find your son watch to see if the dog does this when he's home or while he's gone it might be some type of seperation anxiety call your vet and ask if they think it might be seperation anxiety good luck

She might just recognize your sons smell off the socks which would draw her towards the sock. And if she is really attached to your son she might feel the need to be near him when she has them in her mouth.

My puppy does the same thing sometimes but with her rawhide bones. Occassionally she will pick one up and start whimpering. I just ignore it and she usually gets over it in a minute. If she gets really annoying then I tell her to "dop it" or I substitue another toy.

I don't think it's anything you need to call the vet about.

My cat does this same thing. I just hide the socks in weird places and see if she can find them. It's a hunting instinct.

She may be allergic to something he has on his sock....
Or maybe she misses him being in the sock...
Or maybe he kicked her with his socked foot....

maybe your son's socks have a foot odor that could kill a horse at 50 yards...
