My 12 week old, 25lb dog just got into a bag of adult dog food and ate over half the bag while we were out for dinner (stupid, forgetful boys who don't put things away). Her belly is pretty distended and she has been drinking a lot of water and acting a little funny. Is there anything I really need to be worried about or will she just feel bad like anyone would if they over ate?

I have had a dog in the past with torsion and therefore know what to look for. Besides when I first got home and she drank a lot of what she has been fine and pooed twice (which I believe can't happen if they have torsion). Right now she is just sleeping but is still pretty bloated.

And it wasn't a child who forgot to put the dog food out of reach. It was my stupid boyfriend. We share the dog and he watches her during the day (works from home) so he wouldn't ever let that happen. He isn't used to leaving her alone so he didn't think (like usual) to put the dog food up and I didn't realize it was on the ground. It was our fault, we obviously didn't mean for it to happen and aren't blaming kids.

And, FYI, she is crate trained, but the crate is at my apartment since my boyfriend is with her the entire time that he has her.

The problem with the dog consuming so much dry dog food at once,is the danger of either bloat ( gastic torsion) ,or intestinal obstruction. If I were you,I would call the closest emergency vet and ask for their opinion on what to do.Drinking water will just make the food swell up more in the dogs stomach, which increases the chance of bloat, but not drinking will make an obstruction more likely,as the hard food cannot pass.I'd call the vet and ask to be sure, and be ready for a trip to the vet in the middle of the night if the dog develops any of these symptoms:
difficulty breathing
retching,but not bringing anything up
pale or bluish gums
collapse
inability to defecate or urinate
violent vomiting or diarrhea
Whatever you do,don't let her eat anything else for 24 hours, and try to keep her quiet.

It depends how old your puppy is. I have an 11 mo old mini doxie and I now feed him adult food. For dogs that are prone to weight gain, puppy food becomes very fattening, hence why he was switched. Otherwise, the puppy should be eating puppy food for all his growing nutrients he needs. Also, try feeding him natural Dog food like Wellness or Innova as opposed to Iams or Science Diet. They are just better dogs foods in general because their first ingredient isn't a wheat product.

One of my puppies did the exact same thing, got into my adult dogs food that was wet food also (his was dry). His belly was bulged too. He was a few months older than yours, but there was no damage done, except a tummy ache probably. 5mg (depends on dog size..if under 10 lbs then 5mg, if 10 lbs then 10mg) of pepcid ac might help with it, but before you give anything, you should ask the vet or emergency clinic, a call asking won't cost anything..The pepcid ac will relieve any nausea or discomfort.
You don't have to blame yourself or be hard on yourself or feel guilty..these things happen to every owner, the best of owners too, usually more than once lol. I've had a husky/beagle mix and he could sniff out anything, anywhere, open up any package and even bottles. It's not your fault or the dogs.

I don't want to alarm you too much, but the pup could be suffering torsion due to the huge amount of food she ate and then the water. I would feel better if it were my pup, to take it to a Vet ASAP. Torsion can kill a dog very quickly. The bloat is what is so frightening. Call a Vet and get the dog there quickly.

a call to your vet is always FREE, call and ask them. if your an adult in the house, why didn't you check and make sure the dog would be OK when you were gone? kids are kids, they are not responsible, that comes when they are adults (well sometimes anyway). don't blame children for the dogs dilemma. maybe you should have considered crate training so you know the dog is safe when you are gone

DO NOT LET HER DO THIS! dogs are naturally eaters and usually stock up on food beacause in the wild for a while they might not be able to eat for a while and they will eat until they explode!!

Its probably because she ate too much, not because of the adult food. Take her to the vet to get her checked out, and possibly her stomach pumped.
