Penn International's are nice reels.

You fish saltwater/freshwater?

There are many nice rods to purchase. How much do you want to spend?

PS:(Check my "starred questions" on my profile for further info on good quality rods in various prices.)

UPDATE:

If you have model 955, it should be fine for Freshwater Bass-Bluefishing/light saltwater. If you have any model "bigger", (model 965, 975, Etc.), it would be "over-kill" on the freshwater aspect, but fine for any lite-med saltwater applications.

You will probably need 2 outfits. One for fresh and one for saltwater fishing. If you can purchase a $200 + reel, (Interenationals aren't cheap!), then you can probably "splurge" and buy an inexpensive "strictly freshwater" outfit.

In regards to rods: Ugly Stik "Lite Series" are good inexpensive salt/freshwater rods,($39.99). Obviously, you can afford a better/more expensive fishing pole. For that reason, I suggest you look into a "G Loomis" GL3/GLX or better OR the top of the line Fenwick,(HMG Series), St. Croix,(Avid Series), Daiwa, (Inshore Special), Shimano (Crucial), Etc.

Cabelas makes a nice G Loomis "copy-cat" that goes for $179. Model "XML Ti" 7' MH action. That is a great price compared to a G Loomis starting at $250!

Hope this helps ya?

I've seen those penn internationals on the suds at Long Beach, Jones Beach, and Robert Moses. Usually the fisherman is using a 9' rod and plugging. I perfer a 10.6' St. Croix to fish the surf, and a 6' Star rod to fish the rocks or on a boat. Fishing line nothing but Ande.

depends on the model of the Penn. The internationals are serious reels, and maybe a bit of overkill for what you're fishing for.

But if you have one, good for you!

If you're looking for a good all round pole to go with your Penn, you'd have to give me more information. Weight of line, type of fishing etc. One rig can do alot but it can do it all.

but if you're fishing Long Island sound or the atlantic side of the island, 30lbs test is about all you need (unless you're fishing deepsea for Tuna) for most inshore species.

Again, I'd need more information to give you a more informed answer.

A Penn international is a beautiful reel. It should catch you whatever you want. A 7 ft light-medium action rod will do well.
