My brother is 13, 5'4, and weighs 180 pounds. He wants to lose weight by working on an elliptical trainer. Will this be effective?

For how long does he have to work out per day, and how much weight will he lose in 2 months if he exercised 30 minutes per day?

if he want to lose weight (fat) he has to do cardio 4-6 times a week for average of 45min.
he also should make healthier food choices because diet is 80% of weight loss - eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones, eat lots of fruit and veggies, lean protein, complex carbs, healthy fats and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Cut out all junk food, fried food and food thats made out of white flower (white bread, cakes, cookies, pasta etc), sodas, dressings, ketchup etc.

Exercise 30 minutes, 3 times per week minimum and it must make you break a sweat, or it isn't effective.

Changing his eating habits is a must to keep the weight from rebounding and coming back. Less processed foods and junk food, more fresh and raw vegetables, low glycemic carbs are a must and good fats. You have to eat good fats in order to lose fat. Those are olive oil, sesame oil and coconut oil.

How much he will lose is up to him, everyone loses differently. A safe guide in no more than a pound a week. You will typically lose more the first week as it is mostly water.

He is also still in puberty and may still grow taller and his weight will balance out with his height.
