I'll be moving to NYC soon and I'm considering Queens as a possible living location because it's a heck of a lot cheaper than Manhattan. Does anybody have any views, opions, stories, etc. that they'd like to share about Queens?

I, too, was a resident of Kew Gardens. Queens is a very tricky place to live. Right now the borough's going through some big changes such as rezoning. It depends what you're into. If you want a big nightlife, choose Forest Hills or Astoria. If you're into a suburban African American neighborhood, choose St. Albans. Each neighborhood in Queens is different. However, I want to warn you that schools tend to be very crowded in Queens and overdevelopment is a big problem. Yes, it's a lot cheaper than the city for a reason my friend.

Some places in Queens have very bizarre characteristics. For example, there are several streets in Kew Gardens that are very beautiful and tranquil. However, there are also sections of Kew Gardens that look rampant with Ghetto-ness. If you're a newbie at the borough I recommend Astoria or Forest hills because of closeness to the city, good transit, and both are relatively safe (with some very, very bad pockets).

Queens has a little bit of everything, really. All depends where you go. There are some quiet places to live (especially tucked up in northeast Queens), and there are some very busy places to live. Most parts of Queens have pretty good access to mass transit, though some parts have more complicated access to Manhattan than others (around JFK airport, for example). There are still many bus lines that run right to the Nassau County border (lines along Union Turnpike and Hillside Avenue, for example), providing easy subway access for residents of eastern Queens. There are also many express bus routes into Queens.

Manhattan's high costs come from the convenience of being close to everything. You live farther away, you don't pay that premium. It just takes a little longer to get there.

I guess you have to actually visit the neighborhoods in which you might be interested in living. There are some very nice ones.

I lived in Astoria for 14 years of My existence in the previous I moved to long island 6 years in the past. Astoria is an incredible place to stay. in case you pick to have an lively social existence, they have large cafes, billiards, the action picture theatre down Steinway in direction of Northern street. The residences are effective too yet you're easily going to wish a roommate in case you won't be in a position to have the money for like between $900-$2000/month. The park there is captivating and large for romantic walks in case you intend on having a relationship or already do. it quite is an all around large place to stay and that's an extremely distinctive community so which you have a brilliant form of diverse cultures coming together.

I live in Queens and I don't enjoy it. Over half of the borough has no direct access to the subway. Northern Queens (Bayside, Whitestone, Little Neck) is affluent but far from the city. Astoria, which is right next to Manhattan, is overdeveloped. Jackson Heights is good if you're a foreigner. I live in southeast Queens in a middle class black community. The people in my community aren't as bad as people in the projects but they tend to act out (wearing du rags, sagging pants, etc).

When someone talks about Queens, they talk about the neighborhood. For example I live in Kew Gardens. Not I live in Queens. Kew Gardens of course is in Queens but you don't say Queens you say Kew Gardens. Brooklyn is different. If you live in Gravesend, you don't say I live in Gravesend, you say I live in Brooklyn. Get it.
