ok, so i have a dog thats a little over one, we got her when she was about 7weeks old. of course, she came from the shelter with worms and parasites and we dewormed her and all that good stuff and has been fine. a few months ago she was diagnosed with some type of mites on her nose and was given interceptor to clear it up, which is really for heart worm but can work on mites. she was on that for 3 months, during that time she wasnt supposed to be on any other type of heart worm meds. n-e-who, at the end of this 3 months she was diagnosed with immune diffancy, and then had to stay at the kennel for a week, where she finished the last of her meds. she's been home for less than a month, and today we noticed she has worms!! i've never had a dog this old with worms and dont know if its because she's off that med all of a sudden, or because of the immune diffiancy or what. i know we have to take her to the vet, she'll be going back for rabies updates and fecal check in 2 weeks anyways

so my question is... is it normal for older dogs to get worms again, or is it just because of her medical history? i didnt see them, but i'm assuming they are round worms (my fiance told me when i got home today)

Yes, it's normal for adult dogs to get worms. Most likely, your dog has tapeworms. If you see them in the stool, then 99% of the time it's tapesworms. Also, Interceptor treats roundworms, so they shouldn't be showing up. In fact, as long as you're giving heartworm medicine every month like you should, you shouldn't have any problems except tapeworms. Those come from fleas and are not helped by the medicine in HW prevention. Just like heartworms only take a bite from the one wrong mosquito for infection, tapeworms only need one bad flea. Flea preventatives will help lower your chances of worms, but there's still a possibility. It's not because of her immune system or any of the other trials she's been through. Worms are normal and easily treatable. It's best to take a fecal sample to the vet, have them check it to make sure, and get medicine there. You shouldn't even need an appointment for that. Don't worry, this is not a big deal. Just a few pills to give, probably 2 dose 3 weeks apart, and you're done.

until eventually you will get the undesirable puppy to the vet ASAP interior the morning, he desires to be remoted out of your different dogs besides as you. at the same time as whilst a dogs poops and there are worms, human beings can't get them until eventually you fairly eat them. (Gross, i comprehend.) the only subject is you do no longer comprehend what else this puppy has. There are different forms of worms that dogs can get that human beings can get from them. So at the same time because it may be merciless, bypass get this puppy and crate him (which you will have) yet once you do no longer, lock him interior the bathing room or something of the type. supply him a pile of towels/blankets to place on, a bowl of clean water, a toy which you will bleach later, and lock him in. you will could deworm the different dogs, because of the fact maximum in all threat, they are going to seize them. So this is no longer purely a precaution, this is needed. solid success! i'm hoping you get extra suitable, besides as your puppy!

Dogs can get worms at any time in their life, the only reason puppies ALWAYS without a doubt have them is it's passed on through dormant eggs at birth.

It is perfectly normal for older dogs to get worms, which is the reason yearly fecal testing is recommended.

yes it is perfectly normal for older dogs to get worms. you have to make sure they are wormed regularly. dogs get worms very easily like a human catching a cold. it is just easier for younger dogs to get it because their immune system is not that of an older dog. and i hope your dog gets better good luck.

First take your dog to the vet for a checkup. they'll probably tell you that your dog needs to take "HeartMeds". its a heartworm medication your dog should take every 2 months. thats what my pup uses. Hope the advice helps!
And I hope your dog gets well soon!
