They're supposed to avoid caffeine in general, but I know a lot of Mormons that drink coffee, soda, tea - whatever.

My parents are Mormans although I'm not, the main thing i've
picked up is that it is all about the drug content i.e caffiene and alcohol and nicotine.

They can drink coffee if it is decaff, they can drink soda drinks just not cola 'cause of the caffiene. Alcohol and ciggarettes are considered bad. They are however left to your own discretion . Its something to do with the words of wisdom. You can drink alcohol and smoke ciggarettes if your a mormon it is your choice, but it is believed to be a huge risk to the happiness/health of your family.
So in relation to your question yes they can, but they almost never do.

I'm not a Mormon by the way and I'm not trying to
sneakely convert anyone. I just don't like disinformation

Hope I helped

Oh and I also wanted to say how odd I thought it was that god didn't like you consuming the things that he himself created, it
was something I could never get my head around.

Modern-day scripture received from Joseph Smith, Jr., as outlined in Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants, specify that Latter-day Saints are to avoid tobacco in all forms, alcoholic drinks, and hot drinks--later defined as coffee and tea.

It is not so much the caffeine that is in coffee and tea that is to our detriment, but of the tannic acid that is in them. As you may know, tannic acid is a derivative of leather tanning processes.

In short, anything that could be addictive or harmful to the body should be avoided and that is where individual wisdom comes into play coupled with free agency. Caffeine, we know, can be most addictive so we shy away from coffee and tea. It is an individual decision whether to drink colas that have caffeine in them.

I choose not to drink them because a former prophet of the Church had strongly encouraged the membership not to imbibe in them. That is all I need to know. If I should drink a Dr. Pepper or a Coke I won't go to hell, but it simply isn't a wise healthful choice on my part. What other active Mormons do is their business--and their choice.

Nope, as it is the Mormon belief that anything that is a drug, alcohol, caffiene, nicotine..etc does harm to the holy temple that is the body....Good for me that I am not mormon...as I NEED my coffee...but that's what I know as a good friend of mine is a practicing Mormon...Have a great day! I my self am Pagan...which fuels some interesting debate...but fun in the end.

"With reference to cola drinks, the Church has never officially taken a position on the matter, but the leaders of the Church have advised, and we do now specifically advise, against the use of any drink containing harmful habit-forming drugs under circumstances that would result in acquiring the habit. Any beverage that contains ingredients harmful to the body should be avoided."

Mormons can drink coffee, soda, alcohol and smoke cigarettes.

They're only forbidden to do so by LDS doctrine.

I did not realize the confusion concerning the doctrine of the Word of Wisdom until I read the answers given here.
Guitarpicker56 answered perfectly, in my opinion. After much research, study, and prayer, I've learned exactly what he wrote.
Good question Brother.
