I certainly have to agree that the possibility of mental illness, mistaken-ness and frank misrepresentation of the truth are all viable. For anyone who investigates god-belief honestly and objectively, these are probable alternative sources for the origin of the scripture stories of our modern-day religions. Ignoring the truth of any or all of them as possible sources for the gospel other than by God will not stand for long.
Considering any of these as possible is logical assumption to make and each could even stand on its own with perhaps more strength than that of the divine inspiration explanation for the origin of holey books ... so much more, in truth, that the religions suspiciously won't dare to ever mention them in discussions.

Mainly because over 40 different authors, from many generations ,from 3 different continents ,over a 2000 year period, most of whom did not know each other existed;Have put down their dealings with a Divine Source and they all tell the same story about the nature and purpose of this person. That is a mathematical impossibility!
All these stories of this God,agree with one another even before there was a Jewish religion.God spoke by his prophets until the "Book" was complete. Now all He has to say is in His Bible. The next time He speaks will be at the "Rapture/Resurrection" event.

Or, maybe Andy, those ppl seeking medical help really are hearing God's "voice." What an insightful question! Personally, as a Christian, God can speak to any of us, we choose to listen to Him. As for as the Holy Bible you speak of, they were called Prophets. The prophets were chosen by God to spread the Good News, and set laws to live by. Today, we have ministers, called to preach from God, to do this. The difference is the Prophets actually wrote the scriptures through the Word of God, we (Christians) now respect as the Holy Bible. To non-Christians, I know this sounds insane, that is why by faith we believe! Have a blessed day!

I believe God spoke to people in the bible as a form of communication. We now have the bible, so we don't need an audible voice. However, I have heard that God speaks audibly to individuals nowadays. God has spoken to me too but more through the Spirit. I believe He can use different forms of communication now (visions, dreams, etc) but an audible voice isn't as necessary as before since we have His word.

If you knew the Holy Spirit, you wouldn't have to ask. Jesus told us that he would send the Holy Spirit, and I can tell you He did. He promised the Holy Spirit at the end of John 15 and in the midst of John 16. So He didn't say that you would literally hear his voice, see him come to you, or many other things.
What he DID say is that he would leave, and when he left he would send the Holy Spirit to us. So that is who to look for, but you won't find Him unless you put your trust in God.
That's what the Bible says, you might want to read it so that you won't call people "liars, mistaken or just ill. " Don't look for anything past the promises he made!

God works in mysterious ways.....but only if you believe in Him will you be able to receive signs from Him that He is with you! God uses situations to speak to people, and he also uses others to speak to you!!
These other people of today who say that God spoke to them are probably hallucinating....those people who were from Biblical times...I totally believe that God personally spoke to them, since their hearts were much purer and true compared to anyone from this day and age!

The test for the word of God is in the Bible. It says if your words come true then we may listen.

It depends on your words. but yes i think its both possible for people to hear God today and yes its possible for some people to have written things that don't belong in the bible. I can think of one off the top of my head.

Jesus said to Pray this way, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thy is the Kingdom, and the power, and the Glory for ever and ever, Amen.
And God is speaking to you everyday but are you listening? NO.
Jesus speaks to me and tells me He loves me and ask me to tell others of His love also for them. There is One Liar and His name is Lucifer and he has many children to work through which none of them wrote the Bible..
