Chimpanzee DNA. Yes, we are close, as we share a common ancestor that is about 8,000,000 years old.

98% actually isn't as close as it sounds. For any 2 given animals, the percent similarity will usually be at least 50%, usually around 75 or 80. Because we are so physiologically similar to apes, it can be expected that the DNA is much closer.

Also, humans have somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 billion base pairs. That means that there could be at least 120 million differences between an ape and a human. Hardly enough to qualify as "the same."

Apes are being given the same rights as humans? Wow! So if a wild gorilla attacks a child, they will be given a trial date? Yeah, right! More like a bullet to the brain. Sorry, but just like a dog, a monkey is still an animal and if that animal hurts a human being then they should be put down!

Also, why aren't these monkeys, that are so closely related to humans, having little neanderthal babies?

hmmm... I think people make too much of this fact, honestly.
There can be a lot of variation in 2% DNA difference, given that a lot of DNA is "junk". 98% DNA similarity is a bit higher than what I've heard, too -- but you may be right.
The average human has about a 1% DNA difference when compared to another human.

We are most closely related to chimps, but we're not 98% chimp, or anything like that.. :D

So where do we draw the line.
We also share 93% of our DNA with cauliflower. How many rights do we make applicable to them.

Why dont we just treat every living thing with respect, regardless of how much we have in common. The greatest thing on our fragile world must surely be its diversity. Let's truesure that.

hey how do we know if god decided that he would create us the way he did. how do we know that he didnt do it slowly and over time. The thing that you have to remember is that the bible was writen by humans and on that note. HELL NO they shouldnt have human rights, god gave us dominion over all life and, regardless of what you might say or think, the fact is that they are 98% unless they are actually human, they are not in the same class. these people who say that they are ANIMAL ACTIVISTS are nothing more that shmuchs that need a beating. they have no sence of self so they try to make themselves feel better about themselves. this kind of crap need to stop, i dont care how close some gorilas or monkeys are THEY STILL ARE NOT HUMAN. PERIOD, END OF SUBJECT, I AM RIGHT, YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!

Can there be any doubt?

Sure, what do you get if you try to breed a gorilla with a human?

Your supposed 2% of difference makes a BIG difference now doesn't it =)

"can there be any doubt that we are closely related?"

No, there isn't any doubt. It's just like a Camaro is very similar to a Corvette. Some even have the same engines and a lot of other parts on the cars are interchangeable.

The common factor is that they are engineered by the same company, just like life on this planet has one Engineer.

Genesis 1:25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

You're a loonie, did you know that? Do lemurs get 70% of human rights? Do mice get 50% of human rights? Do cockroaches get 10% of human rights?

DNA is no basis for the assignation of legal rights.

its not 98% of the entire dna its 98% of the enzyme DNA the enzyme DNA strand makes up 1% of the entire DNA strand so the comparison is 0.98% not even 1 percent. this is just another example of how evolutionists will lie to stop you from believing the truth. if you compare dna we are actually closer related to the chicken then the ape so maybe man came from chickens but that information doesnt get published in main stream text books.
