The question would be why do some people feel its ok for everyone else to keep them ?

I believe it is called selfishness and unfortunately there are a lot of selfish, childish, idle people about.

PS good for you!

I hear you. I have a disability and I work for a Non-Profit Disability organizations. There are so many stories I could tell you around this topic.

One of my pet peeves is when people are looking for funding for a ramp and they have $52,000 a year coming in for income. They sometimes think that just because they have a disability, they are entitled to funding. This funding is reserved for people who really cannot afford a ramp because health insurance will not pay and these other people have very low income.

When I see people with various disabilities working full time, getting a car, their own place to live, getting married, etc, and then I hear people without a disability complain about not having transportation but they don't do anything like, get a car when they have no excuse!

There are many people in this world who thinks the world owes them. As long as I keep myself independent and happy, I'm not going to let myself be troubled by other because they won't help themselves. They have the resources to get themselves out of their problems, but because they choose not to, I just ignore them. We all have choices even if they are not always appealing.

Hear, hear.

I work in a Jobcentre. No matter how hard I try, some people will just not work. They want everything given to them, and are prepared to do nothing in return.

Some favourite excuses:

Eastern Europeans have taken all the jobs. (the fact they were unemployed before the Eastern Europeans arrived dosn't seem to enter their tiny pea brains)

I have a pet, and can't leave it in the house all day

I won't get out of bed for less than £250 a week (despite never having done a day's work in their lives)

My friends will laugh at me if I get a job.

They just have no sense of social or moral responsibility

I totally feel ya. My ex bother-in-law was in a motorcycle accident when he was 19 and has 1 arm. Most people I know would just sit at home collecting disability bitching about how bad they have it, but not him. He has a full time job making at least $700 a week as well as being a single daddy (my sis is an ice addict and lost all rights to her 2 kids). I also have multiple health problems ( which I could also claim disability also) and yet I still have a full time job as well as taking care of 5 children.

The simple fact is that social welfare has benefits and problems for society.

Countries like the US have huge social problems as a result of low levels of social benefits (the lowest in the industrialised world). It also results in low minimum wages which result in high levels of working poor, but low levels of unemployment.

On the other hand, European countries have with high levels of social benefits find they have different types of social problems that result, high levels of unemployment, but higher minimum wages.

I know people who have been against social benefits until they end up down on their luck and the social benefits basically stop them from living in the street. Social security was created in the aftermath of the great depression, where vast numbers of people ended up homeless.

Not everyone can get a job, it is unfortunate that they may lack the social skills to make it through a job interview, or not be smart enough to work out how to apply.

Countries such as China have very little social benefits, and as a result they spend much of their money on developing public infrastructure (roads, bridges, parks, airports, railways ports etc), while in western countries we spend too much on social benefits (and the US on the military) and the result is that our infrastructure is falling apart.

Social benefits are useful and important. Countries like Australia have very little poverty related crime. Subsidising families (giving money to the parents of working poor), health care and so on can all be highly beneficial.

You are paying taxes so they don't kick down your door and steal your TV to be able to buy baby formula.

Rather than debate social welfare yes or no, perhaps we can look it in terms the type and nature of those benefits, how they are used, when they are used and how we can help the unemployed to find work (using the money to educate those without jobs so it is easier for them to work).

I agree with you, there are too many who are able to work, can find work, and can do the work, who choose to not work. Many people forget the government owes them nothing, that they should not depend on hand outs, but there are those who make it too easy to receive hand outs. High Five to you for doing what you needed to, wish more thought this way.
