I will be graduating in December 2007 and am eager to apply for jobs in hopes to land an entry level position by graduation or soon after. However, although it is the middle of September would it be too soon to apply? I have been consistently browsing the government jobs and private organizations and as of now there are nearly 45 openings that I would apply and be qualified for just by reviewing the agencies requirements listed in the state I currently reside. I am eager and do not want to wait until the last minute, but at the same time I do not want to start too soon and have potential employers not take me seriously because I still have 3 months before graduation. However, I must also mention at least 90% of the jobs I am looking to apply for are "continuous posting" positions throughout SC that are standard entry level positions in the Department of Social Services that have been open month, after month, after month.

There are 2 types of jobs available.

Firstly there are graduate recruitements. These are usually in the government or large organisations. These are jobs specifically targetted towards new graduates. They start recruiting from the middle of the year (sometimes earlier). So for these jobs you can start applying right away.

These are great opportunities, though often the pay may be low. Generally speaking they will put you through a lot of training first, and in some sectors a year working in the government will increase you chance of finding a good job in industry (stay too long and you chances decrease)

The downside of this type of recruitment is that they don't actually have a specific job for you, and you could find yourself working in role that doesn't match your qualifications or interest you.

Other jobs are usually for positions that will come available and therefore the time frame is around 1 month before they want you to start.

You should apply for the former positions now. But once you graduate you can concentrate on the other positions. You will be free from exams and projects and can concentrate on trying to find the ideal job.

You should be looking now or while you are still in school. In addition to being able to take more time for your search, you will be able to access the resources of the career center in your college. Be sure to check civil service exam dates - many government jobs require exams, but they are only given at certain times, so you want to make sure you don't miss them when they are available.
