Craigslist, autotrader and ebay motors are all good places to look. There are many good cars in the regular newspaper as well. The other thing you can do is go to a car auction.
For your insurance, never buy from the first insurer that quotes you a price as insurers change different prices.
Just spend a while getting a bunch of quotes..

There's no obligation to buy from them, you just get the prices so it's worth your time in gold.
If you are a first time driver and want to save money you buy a simple car, 4 doors smallish engine, pay cash for it and set a high deducible.
