painting in photoshop?

is there a tool that will let me lighten and darken parts of a painting? besides the eraser or a white paintbrush. its all black and white.

Dodge and burn tools and change the opacity to something like 10%.

There are other better tools but none as simple.

Always duplicate the background layer before editing and edit the dupe layer. Non-destructive to original.
