I was in for 9 years. (EM1-ss, P&NA'ed the E-7 test.) So I got out and went to college. Seemed reasonable.

Got married, got divorced, needed to make a living, GI bill ran out, Needed to make more money.... I've been working for 20 years and thinking about finishing up that college degree.

If I had it to do over, I would stay in for the retirement at 40, and start another career at that point. You can go back to school at 24 , 40 or even 60 if you have tghe desire and resources. I work in the automotive industry and we need help so looking for a 40 yr old ex-navy is not only not a problem, the discipline is a plus. Kids today have no loyality nor a clue what it takes to be successful.

Good luck bud!

g-day!

I joined the Navy at 17 and retired at 40. I was a Chief at retirement.

If your serious about making the Navy a carreer and retiring afterwords you can plan for it. Let me ask you this ? How much have you saved in your first enlistment ? Probably very little if anything. I didn't either, so don't feel bad.

I live entirely off my retirement pay and I know people who do on half or less. Just depends how much you plan, save and invest for it. Go see a professional financial planner or talk with some of the Chief's and ask them what/how are they planning for retirement ? If nothing else you'll get pointed in the right direction.

I own my own home, a nice house in a nice neighbourhood. I also support my niece and nephew through college. I have 2 nice trucks, a driver and a maid. So I know you could do it too if you planned for it.

People don't plan to fail, they fail to plan !

Maybe you can stay in and go to school while in the Navy. Univerity of Phoniex has pretty decent online classes. I know Army bases have education centers not sure about the Navy. At some colleges now the average age of the student is 28. You might want to start looking in to saving money now and investing in a CD or IRA account. Even if you retire from the military at 40 you can get another job.

Stay in - it's better all around. First of all, you have medical insurance for life. You can go to school for free while you're on active duty and for some years after you get out. And while retirement pay won't be enough to live on it helps paying the bills. If you retire at 40 then you can take another job (which is easy to find with a military background) for a couple of years. Besides, you are going to save and invest money while you're on active duty. So it's not like you retire and then have to live on your retirement pay only.

Why don't you take some college classes while still in. My friend graduated with his masters while in the Army. You can do both it might just take a little longer. Then after you get your degree decide if you want to stay in or get out but remember once you have a degree under your belt you could always become an officer and their retirment is a lot higher than enlisted.

I got out of the Navy in 1993, but stayed in the Reserves. I started college at 24 and it was no real problem. Sure I was older than most college freshman, but I had no problems fitting in. In fact, I got started graduate school this year at the age of 37 and there is at least two other grad. students older than I am.

properly i will inform you from my very own stories that in case you prefer to artwork interior the militia scientific container then the Air stress is fairly the ultimate determination. this is because of the fact the Air stress frequently operates from right here interior the States so it spends a solid bite of money on family members housing and different centers, like an on-base clinics and hospitals, because of the fact Airmen spend maximum of their time right here interior the U.S. on Base. while the army spends maximum of this is money on the Soldier and the strategies for his activity, and not plenty on base centers and housing. And the army spends virtually all of it's money on her ships... So until eventually you do in reality prefer to spend months removed from domicile at a time interior a deliver just again back domicile for some months then could bypass away back; then the army is for you. this is the reason I recomend Air stress. Oh yeah and ladies can no longer serve on Submarines

I joined when I was 17, but got medically discharged. AW(E-3). I'm using my G.I. Bill, but i know it will eventually run out which in my case is alright, because scholarships are always around the corner! I wished I could have stayed to finish the term, but I was only planning to do one 6 year term! I would get out if I was you!!!

If you like the navy then defenitely stay in. There are alot of job oppourtunity's when you get out if you stay in. If you are asking this because you don't really like it and want to get out, then I say you should get out now before you really don't like it and wind up hating what you do.
