I don't claim to know a lot of model numbers in any particular gun. However, there was a model 70 Winchester in .30-06 caliber. They quit making them in 1964. The model 70 Winchester is usually sought after as a very good example of a bolt action rifle.

Possibly there was a model 74 and model 06 but sound kind of like a combination of all the above information. Hope this helped some.

At what range? At long ranges, the 30-06 is a superior cartridge. But at short ranges, I would take a 30-30 over a 30-06. Especially if hunting the typical forests in which shots are rarely over 100 yards. Though not as powerful as a 30-06, I find the 30-30 rifles to be 'handier', for lack of a better word. Good balance; quick to bring up to my shoulder; moderate recoil; quick to shoot accurately. And the slug that you recover from a whitetail shot with a 30-30 is just beautiful; a perfect mushroom. I've never had a deer yet complain that I should have used a bigger gun. But then again, by the time I walk up to them they actually don't say much of anything.

OK....Based on the website you have a 1906 Slide Action .22 caliber rifle. Is it a .22 short caliber (Only)? Or 22Short ,22Long and 22 Long rifle caliber (Combination of all three)? It should be inscribed on the top of the barrel. What kind of condition is it in? Is there any original finish left?
Is it possible to e-mail a photo of your Grandfather's rifle?

There still is no Model 74 Winchester as you were advised before. What exactly is it? Same questions as asked before...I can't help you without knowing what model it is....

The model 74 is a .22 caliber semi-auto. It loaded thru a cutout in the right side of the stock and I believe it had a capacity of 14 rounds. I owned one for several years, but it was stolen. Otherwise I would still have it. It was quite acuurate and functioned very reliably. If you have a 74 in the family, hang on to it. It's a great gun.
