You'll have someone directly behind the vehicle in question, and they sit there and wait for that car to turn before going straight. Meanwhile, everyone behind them is upset because they want to go around. I mean it may be the rules of the road, but DMV instructors don't teach you how to drive in the real world. If you live in a big city, (over a million) you'll know what I mean. You'll be trampled. How about people that stop at the end of the on ramp to wait for cars to go by instead of matching they're speed and merging?

In Texas, on a 2 lane highway with improved shoulders and a clear line of sight, a vehicle is allowed to pass another vehicle that is turning left by using the right shoulder.

On a 2 lane street with no turn lane, you may not pass on the right by using the parking lane.

The sidewalk is definitely out. :-)

The yield sign is the dumbest of traffic signs. Most people don't even know what it really means. If you ask, you will almost always hear "you don't have to stop." That is so wrong.

When you approach a yield sign, it should be treated as a stop sign. It is painted red for a reason. Just like a stop sign or a do-not-enter sign, both of which are also painted red, they also mean stop.

The word yield on the yield sign tells you that if you have a clear line of sight, and there is no opposing traffic, then you may proceed without actually coming to a full stop.

On the on-ramp of the freeway, if you see traffic in the lane you want to enter, you must allow that traffic to pass, even if it means that you have to come to a full stop to do so.

Many people will speed up and match speed with the traffic and merge OK, most don't even bother to look to see if it is clear until they are at the bottom of the ramp, then it is too late.

if it's safe do it. As far as merging, merge before them if you can because these people cause traffic problems and are a hazard. I don't get why people don't understand they have to be going at least 55 when they enter the highway if not faster depending on traffic. It is illegal though to go around someone if you have to drive on the shoulder.

Two different questions: First question if someone is turning left and there is not left hand turn lane, His or her turn signal is on waiting to turn left. No you can not legally pass them on the left side, normal passing, you have to wait until they turn.
If they start turning while you are trying to pass you and you hit them you are at fault.
Also if you are seen by a police officer you will get a ticket ranging from illegal passing to careless and reckless driving.

If you are behind someone who stops at the end of the on ramp waiting for traffic. If you can swing out over to the second lane to avoid them in case they pull out then yes you can get around them. But if not then it is best to wait until they go because if they start out when you are passing and you hit them whether or not you are at fault will depend on the officer at the scene.
Good rule to follow is never pass a car turning left on the left. Never pass a car turning right on the right. It is as simple as that. Might save you finding yourself in court or a crushed bug under the tandem axles of an eighteen wheeler.

Yes, if there is another traffic lane with a single white or yellow broken stripe line to the right, you can go around...Signal first. check for traffic to the right, then make your move...You have to watch that light and opposing traffic which may be turning left across your path - they may not see you pull around the back...If its heavy traffic, suggest you take a breath and count your blessings, its not worth the hassle.

As a former license examiner in GA, I never faulted anyone that held their position rather than risk life and limb to save a few seconds.

I presume you're referring to many states that have YIELD signs on their onramps to a freeway or highway...The only way to get on this type of roadway is to merge at traffic speed - even if the traffic speed is 20 mph vs the posted speed limit of 65...Yes, merging traffic must yield to thru traffic, so it requires a bit of courtesy from both parties to make it work smoothly...I usually use a left-turn hand signal in addition to the car turn indicator...Then I give a wave of thanks to the vehicle letting me in...Keeps things light

Hope this helps.
