The universe was nothing----all darkness. Scientists believe also that the universe is expanding and a theory states that when it reaches its maximum expansion it would collapse and go back to darkness. It's a cycle.

Incidentally, the Bible also refers to the time before the creation as darkness.

The world was unorganized or unformed materials. It was created or in other words, organized into the world. Before he did that, he created millions and millions, etc of other things in a similar fashion and for the same purposes.

It was the world. Your god concept didn't exist until much after the world was already formed.
