Why do people that chew gum always chew? No mater what they are doing, school, work, sports a lot of people are always found with gum on them.
I think in school or work it might be used as a stress reliever and people take their stress out on the gum. Is gum an addiction or can people just stop chewing gum all at once?
I chew gum but only when I have a test at school and some times I just want to keep chewing and some times I get a craving for gum.
is it just me or does it really seam this way?

-thanks to all who answer...a helpful answer-

I'd call it a habit more than an addiction....not that you can't get obsessed with a habit. Habits are probably as hard to break as addictions. I don't think this is good for your teeth..kind of like gritting your teeth I would think. It could cause a tearing down of your teeth...kinda like erosion. Some people crack their knuckles. A "pet peeve" of mine is tapping a pencil ...or tapping your fingers on a desk. I think all of it's about the same thing...releasing tension. I saw on tv this week that you can't get an addiction to chocolate (altho a lot of women would disagree)..they said it's more an obsession.P,S. All those things are better than smoking !!!!!

I chew gum because it keeps food out of my mouth. That's how I started, at least. Now I chew gum all the time... and if I'm not chewing it, I find myself chewing my tongue.

I doubt you can get physically addicted to gum, but mental addiction, sure.

i think i can say i'm addicted to gum...
i chew it all day, and go through about 2 packs a day
(sounds like a smoker haha)
its just a boredom buster, keeps me occupied at school, tastes good, and gets rid of my stress.
ive gotten alot of jaw problems cuz of it though :(

i think it isn't an addiction cause i can stop whenever i feel like it. i just like chewing gum cause it gives me something to do, makes huge bubbles and cracking sounds and they come in great flavors. and they also make your breath smell good.

i don't think it's a real problem unless you get as bad as Violet Beauregard from Willy Wonka. Just don't turn into a giant blueberry. Sorry, had to do it :p
