That means how many crossovers and drivers a speaker has.

A driver is a speaker cone, or horn within a speaker unit, such as woofers, tweeters, and midranges.

A cross-over is an electronic circuit that can split the sound into different frequencies. Different drivers handle different frequencies of sound better than others, so sending only the frequencies a particular driver works well at usually delivers a crisper, more accurate sound.

A 2-way speaker has a woofer, a tweeter, and 1 cross-over

A 3-way speaker has a woofer, midrange, tweeter and 2 crossovers.

A 4-way speaker has a woofer, 2 midranges, and a tweeter and 3 crossovers.

Or maybe a subwoofer, woofer, midrange, tweeter.

You get the picture.

How many crossovers and drivers a speaker has doesn't necessarily make it sound better than another. It's very subjective.

Usually the biggest jump in sound quality is from a 1-way to a 2-way speaker. 2 drivers deliver much more accurate highs and lows than having just 1 driver for all the frequencies.

I've noticed that 3-way speakers tend to sound tinnier and not as full as similar 2-way speakers. I think it's because they have more drivers handling the higher frequencies.

It's very subjective...every listener has their own preference.

Yes, but, unless you have a trained ear, and a very high end stereo, you will never hear the difference between a quality 3-way and a quality 4-way speaker in the confined space of a car.
