He gave us free will, then told us who he is. The bible is not a set of rules to be followed. It is the revelation of God.

He gave us free will so that we would have a choice of whether or not we wanted to follow the bible and worship him. Worshiping God is our whole reason for existing. He desires our voluntary praise.

We are not forced to worshiped God, it is a personal choice. We can choose to steal, or not to steal; we can choose to be mean or to be nice. Every choice you make has a consequence, sometimes you know before hand what that will be. To use your example during Mary Tudor's reign to choose to worship any way other than Catholic resulted in execution. Those executed made a choice, and they paid a price for that choice. Does that clarify 'free will?'

Yes, limited free will is granted by God to every single person.
And as long as you follow the rules and laws, and pay your taxes, and don't get stopped by any cops, you have all the free will you can handle.

He's not going to make us do the right thing. He wants us to follow the teachings in the bible, but he's not going to force it. He wants us to choose to follow him.

Free will, when not used properly, will result in the loss of it eventually. Following the truth will truly make you free.

Do your children have free will? Do you tell them to play in the yard and not go out in the street?
Same diff. God loves us and wants the best for us and knows the best is His Son, Jesus.

God created us to have a relationship with Him, but part of that means we have to be able to choose to love Him. So, He created for a purpose, to obey Him and live with Him, but in order to have the relationship we must have free will.

It is like the laws in a society. Laws are made to be obeyed but then you also have the free will to disobey plus the consequences.
