South Island is so much better - beautiful landscape vast mountain chains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coasts, golden beaches, alpine peaks, glaciers, rain forests and grassy plains.

From the top of the South Island working the way down I suggest::::
Marlborough / Picton – The Sounds - http://www.destinationmarlborough.com/ You can take the ferry from Wellington into Picton – top of the south island.

Nelson, the sunniest place in NZ! great beaches, vineyards, outdoor adventure and art centres – http://www.nelsonnz.com Spent many years there - beautiful. !!!! Abel Tasman National Park, http://www.doc.govt.nz/templates/PlaceProfile.aspx?id=38455 Golden sand beaches, Awaroa Lodge, http://www.awaroalodge.co.nz swim with the seals, http://www.sealswim.com You can hike down one way and take an aqua taxi back or even kayak.

Whale watching is in Kaikoura. http://www.kaikoura.co.nz

Christchurch, the garden city - http://www.christchurchnz.net/visitchch
The Gondola is great - http://www.gondola.co.nz
Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre - http://www.iceberg.co.nz

Franz Joseph Glacier - http://www.franzjosefglacier.com

Wanaka – Lake Wanaka - http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz/index.cfm/Home

Queenstown http://www.queenstown-nz.co.nz is the adventure capital of NZ – especially for EXTREME adventure – must do’s Bungy jumping, AJ Hackett - http://www.ajhackett.co.nz The world famous Shotover Jet doing full 360º spins! http://shotoverjet.co.nz
And The Milford Sounds, http://www.fiordland.org.nz

There's heaps of Lord Of The Rings tours if you are into that. Search on google or yahoo and you'll come up with heaps.
Have fun!

I came from NZ and there are good parts in both the North Island and the South Island. In the South Island the top part, Marlborough sounds and Nelson are beautiful, they have gorgeous beaches and the weather is great in summer. The south Island is more country than the North, meaning alot more driving and farms and lotf of green paddocks. The North Island the best place to see are in the Bay of plenty which is on the east coast just over half way up and down the north island. Place like Tauranga, Coromandel, are all so beautiful, golden beaches, and an awesome place to kick back and relax, also these are the most popular places to go as this is where everyone heads to party on holidays, like xmas etc. Cities to visit, wellington is awesome on a fine day when its not windy, lovely harbour, the nite life isn't too bad, Auckland can be rough all depends where you go, personally I hate the place, Christchurch is also a nice place to visit. Have a wonderful trip and Ihope you enjoy, also if you go check out Rotorua, the hot pools and active volcanos, a smelly place to be but at the same time worth a visit.

Hi Just to point out its the North Island and South Island...unless you actually mean northland and southland......!! The South Island is perhaps better known for begin prettier than the North Island.....the latter having 3/4 of NZ's population so there are bigger cities ( eg Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington).....and while Auckland, Rotorua ( and the surrounding area eg Tongariro National Park) as well as lots of beaches are worth looking at, in the time you have available, I think if you REALLY wanted to see some great places ( and see them so you don;t have to rush)....I would suggest the South Island......It dpeneds on what you like tho...there is lots of scenery in the South Island...I will give you a couple of websites that you may find useful and there are some proposed journey planners too.

Please ignore the answer by Berrytheft.
In parts of the South Island there has been no appreciable rain for about 4 months (which is usual) and only normal rain over the remainder, (that is about 1 to 4 inches per month average).
In parts of the North Island there has been heaps of rain - much more than is usual. Over the last 4 months, the whole North Island has had more rain than it would normally get in a year.

I'm going to NZ early next year. I have a friend that lives in Masterton (north island), so I'll be there. I've never been before, so I couldn't say which is better, but I believe it's cheaper to fly into Auckland on the north island. For things to do, go to www.purenewzealand.com and for airfare, try Qantas Airlines.

Have fun!

If you have seen the Lord of the Rings movies (made in NZ) the North Island is the Shire and the South Island is everything else. It depends on what you like.

North Island cos it jus constantly rain in the south island, especially wen u are traveling to nz. Come to the North. Mind u if u are old go to the south island and if u love miserable weather go south island.

Places to visit in the North Island, Rotorua for tourist attractions, Mt Maunganui which is a hour frm Rotorua for beaches and cocktails, Whakatane for fishing and sightseeing. I culd go on and on, but those are the three main i wuld reccommend,

E-mail me if u want any more info.

Stay away from the main citys like Auckland is is jus totally crap. Fly into auckland and head down to the Bay of Plenty.
