What is a polite way to handle someone who comes to my door wanting to tell me about their religion? If I were that interested, wouldn't I come to them? There are churches, right?
Also I notice that only those professing to be Christians do this. I've never had anyone from a Jewish or Muslim faith come to my door.
The last time someone wanted to share, I told them only if they would stay and listen to my views too ... they left.

I gave up on "polite". Polite doesn't get through their thick skulls. And yes, I've only had Christians do this kind of thing as well. Makes you want to smack them.

Edit: Oy, its not just JW's, its Mormons too. And Mormons are pushier.

Edit: Incidentally, when they knock on your door, invite them in to worship The Master, and tell them that the goat just died so he's going to be very happy. My husband did that once and they never came back lol.

No true religion shoves anything down your throat. It's very simple.....Jesus COMMANDED his followers to preach to people regarding the good news of God's heavenly kingdom. (Found in Matthew 28:19, 20) This is something that is NOT optional to true followers of Jesus Christ. To preach to people, you have to talk to people, and to talk to people you have to go to where the people are, which is usually their home. True Christians carry out that assignment from Christ diligently, and on the other side, the people who are in the homes they come to have every right to listen or turn away these ones. Nothing is forced on you, and it doesn't inconvenience or cripple you to take 30 seconds to hear what they're saying. Lord knows you spend hours and hours on end wasted in front of the TV either watching it or playing video games. You either listen or you don't listen.....it's always your choice. Nobody coming up to your door and wishing to share with you good news for the future is going to take away that choice from you.

The Muslims don't care if you convert or not, and the Jews understand what their religion is. We don't go door to door. Show me that in scripture.

Tell them you are not in need of what they have to sell. They don't want to hear your views. They have a set of questions and answers and NONE of them are right. Don't answer the door next time.

Well I'm a Mormon so here's what I think.

We always ask to come in and talk to you. All you need to say is "Sorry, but I'm not interested." no need for the dramatics.

PS I'm guessing it was not Mormons because they would literally jump at the chance to socialize with anyone remotely interested.

And then KA-BAM you're baptized. Just like that.

They're the most annoying people! I tell them I'm very happy with my religion, and, no thanks, I don't want any literature. Yes, I'm already saved by the Grace of God and by the Love of Jesus. Why am I home on Sunday morning? Because I went to my Church's 6 p.m. Saturday Mass. The Sabbath starts on Saturday at sundown, you know. So, so long, have a nice day!

and although I dont mind speaking with them usually
I was doing the washing up and cleaning when they came
so I answered the door with my rubber gloves on....
they said " I see you are busy " ... left me a pamphlet and left

I think you did the right thing in demanding they hear your views. The other thing you can do is let them talk then challenge as you see fit. I'm sure you can get some good entertainment out of it as well as keep their heads spinning. Heck you might even find a convert.

You could also tell them flat out what you think.

I'd just tell em "No, go away" and slam the door. Next time they showed up I wouldn't answer the door, instead I'd call the police and ask for them to be arrested.

Jehovah's Witnesses are a prime example of "christians" spreading their propaganda door to door. If I wanted their propaganda, I'd be at their church.

Actually, ONLY members of cults do that. They might tell you they are Christians, but they aren't. Most likely, they were either Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons. Those are cults and the members claim they're Christians in order to be more acceptable in mainstream Christianity. They couldn't be further from Christianity, however.

The polite thing to do is simply tell them you're not interested and let it go at that. If they argue or try to get into your house, just close the door. They probably won't be back ... at least those particular ones. ;-)

I am sure there are some websites that will show you how to set up the claymore mines in your yard to take out most of the jws before they can even get to the bell. but, if that doesn't help, you can always mount a .50 caliber machine gun on your front porch, make sure you turn up the jw Prince song "darling nikki" to 10 on your hi-fi, like the "ride of the valkyries" in apocolypse now.
