I once did it on a pickup truck holding onto the rear bumper looking for a squeak but that was maybe 200 feet at low speed although we had to hit the brakes a couple times to get the squeak to happen. I saw a documentary on how the stuntman did the Indy stunt and they had dug a trench for him to slide in at low speed and then sped up the film to get a more realistic shot of a higher speed....worked great....looks real. I think the same guy had done a similiar stunt a few years earlier with being dragged between horses on a stagecoach and got both his legs broken when he let go and got run over by the wheels....The movie was "The Lone Ranger" if I recall...mid-eighties version.
Would not want to try hanging underneath or crawling along the bottom of a moving truck which makes the stunt so spectacular....like the old stunts of the 30's and 40's serials which is what the Indiana Jones series was suppose to emulate...remember watching them in my youth and brought back lots of memories....thrills, spills and chills a minute...lots of action and fights.

Some idiot tried this a year or two ago to try to "help" his friend locate a noise in the drivetrain. I think it was a big box truck (like 5-10 ton) or other large truck and they found him wrapped around the driveshaft a mile or two down the road, dead as a door nail.

You have to remember that Hollywood stunts are all smoke and mirrors these days and even when they were done by stunt men they had all kinds of layers of protection to keep them safe.

Your clothes and shoes would be ripped off in a matter of seconds unless you were wearing some high top leather boots with thick leather soles and even then the soles would be hot as bacon in a frying pan lickity split. The guys that do those motorcycle stunts have boots with thick felt to insulate the soles from the outter steel plates they slide on when holding on to their bikes on cruise control.

Seconds would be the best answer, a matter of seconds. Some people wouldn't last that long.

Good Luck!

Not very long. The heat from the exhaust system, especially the catalytic converter would discourage anyone from 'hanging around' for very long.
