is it possible (legal) to receive speeding ticket based on picture taken while passing with excessive speed? How does it work in Maine? Do you need to be pulled over by a cop or a record from that device is enough to send you ticket ?

Jacek... trust me... they are here in America too.

Akron, Ohio has been using them for 2 years now in school zones. It's basically the same as a red-light camera. The unit takes a picture of your car and your license plate. You get a ticket with a picture of your car and plate in the mail. Since there is no way to prove who was behind the wheel with 100% accuracy, they do not issue any points on anyone's license, but you, as the owner of the vehicle, get hit with the fine nontheless.

Personally I think they create more problems than they solve and can even lead to accidents which many people have commented on from the cameras in the UK.

Cleveland, Ohio saw a dramatic INCREASE in rear-ending accidents after they installed red-light cameras at their busy intersections.

There are some intersections now where there are cameras attached to radar. The reason being is the flagrant abuse of the traffic signals, meaning running red lights.

I first saw this conduct in Italy where the Italians would not stop for a stop sign or a stop light. The Italian police had some intesections staked out and would write down as many license plates as possible as drivers plowed through red light after red light after red light all day long 365 days a year. They would turn in their lists at the end of their shift and the owners would be identified and then they would receive a "ticket" or bill in the mail for the infraction.

Since we have a much larger population these days it is technology catching up with criminals that will aid the police in staying on top of these bad drivers and can even help track cars that may be leaving the scene of another crime.

The only people concerned, of course, are the crooks and criminals.

Good Luck!

The UK is covered by thousands of automatic speed trap cameras, and you automatically get fined and receive points on your license if you get caught speeding by one.

I expect that if they are not here in the US already, they will be at some point in the near future.
