Before Christ's death, there were 2 places: Paradise [Abraham's Bosom] and Hell. Remember the man on the cross beside Jesus who believed in Him? Jesus told him that he would be with Him in Paradise. Both paradise and hell [Hades] can be considered "holding tanks." The righteous dead were in paradise; whereas the dead who are lost are in hell. However, Christ overcame death and rose to heaven on the 3rd day after His death, taking all those believers in Paradise with Him. Therefore, for believers today, to be apart from the body is to be with Christ -- in heaven. You can see this, too, in Revelation, where the martyrs of the great tribulation are found not in paradise, but before the throne of God and given white robes and told to wait a little longer. Hell still remains today, still a nasty place. In Rev. 20, you will find out what happens to hell, and all those in it -- it is thrown into the lake of fire forever.
You will also see that at the day of judgement, both heaven and earth will flee in the presence of Christ on the great white throne. They too will be no more. The last chapter of Revelation discusses the new heaven and the new earth that God will create.

Be wary of the answers...belief in purgatory is not scriptural.

After you die you go straight to heaven...if you're saved ofcourse. You do not go anywhere else. If you are not saved then you go to hell and wait for the Rapture to happen. Then, after the Rapture the dead in Christ will rise up first. The ones who are not saved will be judged for all their sin and be cast into the Lake of Fire.

I do believe it says that the dead know nothing.
Honestly, I really don't know and yours is an excellent question. I'd like to know also but I don't think anyone can answer you with certainty, yanno? There are millions of people who'd like to know the same, lol. Me among them.

Some people believe that spirits are around us or can be. Like hauntings and such. I'm really not certain what I believe. I was raised to believe that spirits around us are real and happens. I've not had an encounter with anything of the spirit realm (and I don't want to) though.

I guess we'd like to believe that a person's spirit is around and aware. It's a comforting thought, huh? To know they're around just not flesh and bones like us. I'm not sure but what I am sure of is that the children of God will be raised again. That's all I know with certainty.

I wish I could have been more concise for you. I'm sure the smart alleck responses didn't help you either.

To the dust you shall return until Judgement Day. Psalms 146:4 says that man "goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish" Psalms 115:17 states "the dead themselves do not praise Jehovah, nor do any going down into silence" Because of this, in the bible the death state is often likened to sleep. Act 13:36 says that when King David died he "fell asleep" and Thessalonians 4:13, 14 refers to christians that have died as "those who are sleeping" Jesus also spke of Lazarus in the same way when He went to resurrect him from the dead. So we are sleeping until Judgement day comes and Jesus will resurrect us as He did Lazarus and send us to our rightful places in Heaven or Hell.

Some souls will pass a purification period in purgatory. These souls are not quite perfected enough to enter heaven but are not cut off from God's grace so as to deserve to be in hell. After they have purified themselves to the very last sin, they will be allowed to enter heaven.
