My name is Rudy, and I'm an immigrant from nicaragua. I came to this great country because my mother needed a kidnee transplant or she would die. This country took us in asking nothing in return. my mother had a second chance at life.I earned my citizenship and my mother as well. I'm currently 17 years old and a senior in high school. This country has given me more than any other could, Education, Health, and my mother's life. This is a debt I can never repay, but I seek to be as useful to this country as possible. At 15 i saw that telecommunications is a field that is always in demand in the military. I have taken INT courses at bloomfield college and I am also CCNA certified and im a district champion of Networking Concepts.I'm also varsity 119 for my HS wrestling team. Now the real question is, should i continue my education so i can serve this country with greater skill after college or should I join to serve immediately now that my country needs me

Speaking as a Marine, if you want to be a Marine there are benefits to both before and after school. If college is a given and you know you won't be running up huge college loan bills, go to college and become an officer. If college isn't easily affordable, enlist and have the Marine Corps pay for your college education after your enlistment is up. What may be best is enlist and put in an officer package after four years. Everyone knows enlisted Marines make the best officers. Mustangs!

Without college you would be enlisted, with college you can still be enlisted (if you want) or you can become an officer. To be an officer you have to be an American citizen, enlisted you don't, are you? If you are not an American citizen and don't have plans to become one, then join before college. The G.I. Bill and tuition assistance can help with the cost of school. If you are a citizen, I say go to school first then join, but if you don't and decide to join before you get your education you can do what i suggested already (G.I.Bill and tuition assistance) or put in for a program that will send you to school to get your degree and then you become an officer after graduation.(MECEP- Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program) Good luck to you.

Hi Rudy,
like you I am an Immigrant from Germany. I got my citizen ship arround 1995. I am proud to be an American.
I applaud you for your thoughtfull ness in such a young age . I think serving in the Military is an honorable thing to do. It's a great institution for young people . My husband served 24 years of his life in the US AF. He started when he was 16 years old. You probably have ROTC in your high school. Go there. Ask those ROTC advisors for assistance and advice. They can help guide you. And ROTC is a great way to earn college credit . So you also being giving training and being shaped and formed to the ROTC and future military's needs. Yes, indeed it would be the greatest adventure you have ever undertakien. However, I would finish your HS diploma. As the military say's that that's what you need to get in. Join the ROTC in your local HS. Good luck.

College, man. College.
If you choose the marines, you go in as an enlisted man. There's nothing wrong with that,if fact, it is very honorable. but if you have what it takes to go to college,( and I don't mean just the money, but aptitude, enjoying studying, etc) then you can go into the marines as a officer.
Best of luck. Follow your heart.

Very happy that things turned around for the two of you. Now if it were me I would get my education and then join. You can still come in as an enlisted man or go officer. If you come in now as enlisted, once in the FMF you can still go to school an earn a degree in something. It might take a little longer but it can be done. If you went to school now and took a full load in about three four yrs you have the degree. In the service you will normal only take maybe two subject at time instead of three or four.
Now as enlisted it give-es you a different out look on things once you go officer an in my mind it makes as a better person to work for because you have been in my shoes so to speak.

I would join before. In the marines you get credit towards future ranks depending on extra college courses you take while enlisted. The marine ranking system is incredibly competitive and taking the classes while enlisted will benefit your military career which means higher ranks, more money, bigger influence, and happier life.

Go to college. Get an ROTC scholarship. Join after college and be a commissioned officer.
Thank you. This country welcomes people like you.

If you are definitely going to go into the Marines I would do it before college... the Marines will actually give you money to go to get an education after you are done serving...
