Usually dairy is best avoided, as it contains lactose, which is a sugar that most dairy contains. After weaning, dogs and cats bodies lose the ability to digest this and this can lead to stomoach upsets, from slight runs, to gastroenteritis!
HOWEVER, there are times that LIVE natural yogurt can be beneficial. As it contains live bacteria, it CAN help put 'ggod' bacteria back in the gut, at times when something may have upset the naturally good/bad balance. A classic example is during and following a course of anti biotics. Anti Biotics are give to kill bad bacteria - but they aren't perfect, so can destroy a significant number of the good bacteria also. This is the reason that the live, natural yogurt can be beneficial - the 'pros' at times, overriding the 'cons'
Hope this answers your question?

Yogurt is excellent for your dogs stomach. It really helps with digestion and and keeping a healthy balance of bacteria. Plain no sugar yogurt is what you should give them and NOT one with the artificial sweeteners either it is toxic to dogs. I buy The Prioboitic Powder for my dog it has all the stuff yogurt had but plus other cultures that really helps dogs. It keeps my dog regular and it works if they get diarrhea. You can get it at any natural pets store.

It helps with a dogs digestion. It also replaces the 'good' bacteria when a dog is on antibiotics which kills off both the good and bad.
Only use plain yogurt, not the flavored type.

My chihuahua always gets excited when he see's me feeding my daughter her Yo Baby organic yogurt. He knows I save him a spoonful and I let it him lick the container clean before I throw it away.
Here's some dog treat recipes using yogurt so apparently it's safe.

I also found this article on a holistic pet treatment site:

Yogurt with Probiotics for Gas, Vomiting and Gastric Distress in Dogs

8/9/2006: Amy from Odenville, AL writes, "My dog was having stomach problems; gas, weight loss, eating grass and vomiting. After about a week, we had blood tests and a complete exam with the vet, who could not say what was wrong. No parasites or worms, no organ problems. At wit's end, I thought about probiotics and yogurt helping people's stomachs. I checked, and yogurt is safe to feed dogs. My dog eats at least 4 tablespoons of yogurt per day and has not had any more problems; even his weight is back to normal. It is his favorite "treat" and my other dogs get it every day too!"

Yogurt aids digestion, just as it does for people. My dogs get a tablespoon of yogurt daily - no-sugar, no-fat yogurt.
