I have passed 3 stones over the years. I'll tell you this, think of childbirth without benefit of drugs. I have a very very high pain tolerance. But passing a stone put me on my knees and for the first time in my life, I couldn't help but groan and gasp from the pain. Now, the good news, the pain starts when the stone starts moving. It is an intense pain along your flank on the side the stone is on. A trip to the hospital er gets you some really good meds that stops the pain instantly. Then, once the stone is out of the kidney and into your bladder, the pain stops by itself. Then, when the stone drops thru the eurethra, it only hurts a little. But, there are two types of stones. The bad one is caused by uric acid. this one looks like a cockelburr with points sticking out at all angles. That's the one I have. The other type, is almost smooth and passes much easier. You should check to see which kind you have. Uric acid type stones also occur in people with gout. The largest stone I passed was about the size of your little fingernail. I wanted to die till they got the pain meds in me. the other two where much much smaller. They hurt just as bad at first, required pain meds, but then passed on thru much easier. I now take "alopurinol" daily to prevent new uric acid stones from forming. That's as truthfull as I can be. Good luck

I have passed over 10 stones in the last year and had lithotrispy surgery. Most stones under 3 mm pass with out incidence but that's not to say all of them, honestly it depends more on the texture of the stone. If there is blockage then there will be pain and to be honest it is very very painful. If you feel pain go to the er and seek pain management. Wishing you luck!

Pain is different for everyone. You might be able to handle passing the stone that size when someone like me who is a total wimp can't handle it. If the pain gets to the point of not handling it go back to the DR or ER and ask for help.
It is different for a man and woman.
Warm baths may help,,,it helps you relax and don't be afraid to urinate in the tub...you may pass the stone then. (by the way I KNOW that sounds gross but some doc's will say the same)

Is it going to hurt? Definitely. How much (on a scale) depends on your personal pain threshold. Some people can tolerate pain better than others, and it's very personal - even to the type of pain or its location. While that little puppy is travelling down your tubes and making its way to the outside world, you will experience some stabbing pains, and some burny-type pains. Usually they don't last forever, and if you dwell on how much it MIGHT hurt, you'll start to obsess. My advice is to say to yourself, "it's gonna be what it's gonna be", know that this isn't going to kill you (or else your doctor wouldn't be letting you pass it on its own) and you'll have interesting stories to tell in the future!

having a kidney stone is VERY PAINFUL....i worked in dialysis for 2 years (people with kidney failure)....sometimes they will put you in a whoolpool.....that makes the stone to break up and be easier to pass....on a scale of 1-10.....8-10 is normal (depending on your tolerance to pain) If it doesn't pass in a week, or less....there is NO reason you should put yourself through misery...ask your doc about the pool, or removing it.....good luck!!!

Not sure how different it is for men and women, but I had one similar sized, and I put it at 10 on the scale. And I've blown out both knees, broken my nose x3, broken an arm, separated a shoulder, cracked three ribs, and broken my foot before. I passed out, fell off the toilet, and cracked my head open on the bathtub when it happened. Sorry.

Mine have been like '0'. They got here out nearly with out me noticing. They didn't use a drill, the nearby anaesthetics are very well and far bigger than whilst I have had gasoline. it's faster than having a filling (for the reason that they do not truthfully must do something a lot).
